If you do make sure your passenger has good comfy footwear and a red flag

I’m not sure what real impact the 20mph thing has, but prior to that I had a great trip round mid Wales. Fantastic roads. Black mountain pass is superb, as are most of the A roads and the Elan Valley. Elan Valley for me wasn’t the best for driving, but full of breathtaking scenery.

The 20mph limit is only on some roads that were previously 30mph, not a massive impact on driving through Wales. We have a trip planned for June , but not the exact route yet. Mainly around Snowdonia and probably over to Angelsey.

Here's a couple of single day trips (from home in Liverpool) I did in the middle of winter...about a month after I got my Z4MC in 2008...

I also have some Google Maps itineraries from when I used to do 3-day, small group runs (the following are all based on staying in Welshpool, as we had drivers from Cornwall, Bicester and Liverpool).

The variations were just there in case we needed to shorten the route due to bad weather or hangovers...and of course all the routes will have to be re-checked for road closures/bridge closures/speed limits/anti-driver local farmers/etc. as they are at least 10 years old.

North Wales

Mid Wales

South Wales

Oh bu**er, more twrists. Guess that's what happens when you live in a sub-tropical paradise.
Well, I tend to go by myself now, as the others in the group can't be arsed with all the moaning locals. I've got thicker skin and I'm 1/4 Welsh (on the Price side) ;)

If you do the South Wales route by @mmm-five you might want to amend it and go via the Military Road from Llywell to Tirabad and onwards to Garth then Builth Wells. We use the road South from Builth through Upper and Lower Chapels back to Brecon on our local evening runs with our Zedshed Cymru members during the year, usually stopping off at the Chippy in Builth. Since you will be coming up from Devon good base would be Premier Inn at Abergavenny or Ebbw Vale or other Hotels in the area. Gets quite popular with the walkers booking up rooms over weekends prices to match due to popularity.
If you want to go further North I can recommend Bala as a base for exploring, Slate Mine at Blaenau Ffestiniog and Portmerion Village as well as the Ffestiniog steam railway at Porthmadog all reasonable near. I used the White Lion pub in Bala as a base over a couple of nights a few years back, https://whitelionroyalhotelbala.co.uk/rooms/
