Morning
How noisy is the viscous fan on the 2.8 Z?
I can hear it over the engine noise.
It isn’t locked and I suspect it runs at more 2500 rpm
Thanks a lot.

Shouldn't be overly noisy. Check for lateral movement of the fan with the engine off, should be solid with no movement. The more lateral movement the more goosed it is. May need changing, if it goes it could burst your hoses.

It can fly apart and trash your radiator and fan shroud too.

Thanks. It is running the moment the car is started and of course goes faster as the revs increase. Most noticeable at the high reeves in 1st and 2nd gear.

With the engine warmed up and at idle speed you should be able to stop the fan rotation with a rolled up newspaper. If you can't then it needs replacing. Don't try to stop it with your fingers.

Unless you have a freezer bag full of ice and a nearby hospital.
Thanks . Going outside to have a look. Is that the viscous coupling ?

Yes. It is bolted to the water pump and then the fan is bolted to the coupling.

We went out to the car started it and could easily stop the fan with the paper.

You could always take the hub off and see if it's still noisy, there are other things in there that make noise.
Thanks
The engine just sounds a little noisy at high revs I.e 1st and 2nd gear. A little racier than the nice growl the 2.8 makes in 3rd +

New coupling and what a difference. Much quieter and performance from a standing start is really good now
