If you can't get it off [it is a left hand thread] you might have to soak it in WD40 for a couple of days, squirts here and there whenever you think of it. I couldn't get mine off so I took it to a mechanic who tried and failed. Soaked it and it came off like a new one! I do have the proper leveraging tools now though. Then un-clip the internal fan shroud at the top with the push in plastic clip things, and pull the whole lot up and out together. Easy.

Are you sure that the noise isn't the secondary electric fan? When this cuts in it does sound like a jet warming up. The viscous fan doesn't make much noise in my 3.0
Hi, my 3.0i viscous fan is also quiet, my 3.0i doesn't have a secondary air pump, I know the 2.2 & 2.8 do have this pump which can be noisy. Not sure whether all models have it?

I think he was referring to the electric cooling fan, not the smog pump. It only runs for 30 seconds or so after start up.

I junked the one of my W reg. 2.0. They run perfectly well without it, you just need to block off the port on the cylinder head where the valve is located.

All there was on mine was a small rubber tube to the valve, I just blocked it off by pushing a small ball bearing down the tube. The electrical connections was tied back out of harms way. Everything else came off, but as I said mine was a 2000 2.0. MT52 engine I beleive.

@roadvoyager1 did you replace the 90/99 with a 80/88 radiator dual temp switch? I have the 3 pinned [like needles] version and want to replace it, cannot find what to do it with.
Yes radiator temp switch was replaced. The replacement is standard for a BMW 4 cylinder engine. Details are in my write up. This is the link.
