Hi I want to do a delete mod of the viscous fan and use the AC electric fan as the main cooling source, I know is a fairly common mod however does anyone know what temp the replacement fan sensor needs to be and where to get them? @Aceman thought you may have the answer to this one?

any advice would be great thanks in advance

Posted this a couple of months ago. My Z3 is a 2.8ltr so check that your M standard stat is the same. I think it gives all the info you are looking for plus a bit more.

This is the link to the fan delete thread (see post#17 in it for my explanation) https://zroadster.org/threads/fan-delete.7136/#post-135113 .

It also covers the water pump/thermostat and belts replacement, with parts and part numbers we used.

Hope that is of some help.

I deleted the fan today with no other modifications. Took the car for a test drive then left it in the garage to ensure the aircon fan works fine. It is all good.

I researched every article I could find on this subject and found where a guy in Florida just took the fan off with no mods and has been fine for more than a couple of years. He discussed several options such as getting a lower temp thermostat [bad idea] and/or replacing the aircon fan activation switch in the side of the radiator. It is unnecessary to do that. BTW I have already replaced the thermostat and the water pump a couple of weeks ago.

I was convinced after reading several articles where fans have disintegrated destroying a lot of parts and sometimes the bonnet with one guy on here having that happen with a fan only 2 years old! Another thing was a test on the loss of HP. The viscous fan can take as much as 20 HP to run! Deleting was a no-brainer.

Hi yes you will need to change the fan switch for the lower one 88/92 I think it is should be on my thread. One point though I have just reversed this mod after nearly a year, my M though fine under normal and spirited driving and would idle with no problem in hot weather with the AC fan keeping every as cool as the viscous, but ran constantly at the 2nd fan stage under very hard driving and long slow hill climbs and I didnt really like the idea of it running so hot plus with no viscous there is no air flow over the oil cooler and there is no activation for the fan here, so the oil temp was usually always over 100 degrees, so back to how the BMW engineers designed it! New viscous and fan refitted and the temp switch back to original spec, runs spot on for both oil and coolant temp under all conditions now. But it depends on how and where you drive it I guess.

Interesting @Nodzed I did not consider the oil temp. Oddly I have never seen it mentioned anywhere!

I have the 3.0 and use it as my daily driver in Tasmania Australia. It is cool here 9 months or so of the year. From time to time I do a little bit of spirited driving with a Car/motorcycle group which is usually about 30 minutes of spirit and the rest cruising.

Any recommendations? Do you know what part number it is for the 80/88 switch, I can't find a reference to it that will suit my M54. Have you got a S50? Can I use a dif grade of oil to compensate for the higher oil temp [if it is going to be an issue?

Cheers,

@Nodzed I don't know if your in a position to comment or not... I have an auto and was wondering in the clutch fan assists in cooling the trans fluid. The pipes are in front of the radiator so I don't know if the air being drawn into the engine bay by the fan contributes to the cooling.

BTW, It is winter here so I will be safe with cooling [I think], and my run to work and back is mostly 100 kph with little city driving. Therefore there is a lot of airflow across the radiator.

If anyone has something to contribute I will be grateful.

Cheers,

I've taken fans off other cars before, not a problem till you wind up stuck in traffic for a while, and if it starts getting a bit hot turn the heater up fully hot and fan on full, that'll get it down again. Just keep an eye on the temperature gauge (like you should do anyway).:)

You can always run a Spal electric fan in place of the Viscous if you do heavy driving. I was going to do that but on the 2.8 had no issues so no need.
