Has anyone on here travelled Vietnam, we are going backpacking for 3 weeks in April next near, the plan is to fly into Hanoi and out of Hochimin, covering the North, South and central, we are planning on doing it at our own leisure and the last thing we want is an itinarary.
Just wondered if any of you guys had done a similar trip and could offer some advice

Wow go get it mate! Looked fantastic when top gear were there. Have no advice though sorry.

I think Hugh is currently in Vietnam on a biking holiday. He'll fill us in when he gets back

Was going to go next year but life is just to short mate, a close reletive of mine died in his sleep a few weeks back, no reason or cause yet, he was only 55 and had been with his wife since they where both 14, he was a great man with a big personality and is such a loss

Very sorry to here that mate. We made big changes last year because of my health scares. We are really enjoying life again now, doing a lot more of what we've wanted to do for years. This isn't a rehearsal, we only get one go at it.

Sorry to hear about your relative Sean, but you're absolutely right too. You may not get a tomorrow so go for it mate. Another forum member told the same tale a couple of weeks ago, we fully intend to enjoy our retirement as much as sensibly possible.

Tony.

Well...I was there in 1966-67...it wasn't exactly a pleasure trip , though, lol. As a helicopter crew chief I did get to see a lot of the country, from Saigon to the DMZ, and the South China Sea to the Central Highlands. Beautiful beaches and lots of rainforest and jungle...

Just see your post and it’s been 2 months since we’ve come home and we are already planning our return lol.one of the best holiday experience we’ve ever had Sarah felt so comfortable she would happily travel Vietnam on her own.I don’t know if your much of a biker but it’s a really great way to see the country. When we arrived in Hanoi it looked chaotic but we never saw an accident or road rage in the chaos.Definatly don’t do one of the cheap tours but try to plan a rough route.Presonaly if I was going to hire a bike book yourself in for a day trip with a guide it gets you confidence of riding in the country and you get so much information that helps you make the most of your adventure. We stayed at”homestays” ours were cheap and really good .I can tell you where we went if you like but I’m sure that wherever you end up going it will be amazing.

A friend of mine travels there 3 times a year, he reckons Hoi An is as good as Vietnam gets. Its central coast, looks beautiful. May be well worth a visit.

It's on my list for at least a 3 day stop

Thanks pal, we wont be doing bikes as my wife and daughter are not great on them, what where the home stays like, my concern is that when we go on april it's going to be bloody hot, 40+ during the day and lows of 27 at night so fancy a bit of aircon, what places where your high lights

Plenty of choice of hotels in Hanoi and so much to see we stayed in the old quarter but Hanoi is so much bigger. We were eating at highway 4 restaurant and got talking to one of the staff and drinking a lot of rice wine he wouldn't let us pay for our meals lol.We had some lovely experiences just stopping in almost nothing places and trying the food or buying some sticky rice and bananas.our trip took us up to Sapa which was very touristy but managed t avoid most of them the countryside is brilliant. We stayed on a floating house in Lan ha bay please dont get it confused with Ha long bay they are so different. The experience on the floating house was worth it but the facilities left a bit to be desired but not a tourist in sight 1 night was enough. The overnight sleeper trains are worth every penny and the are cheap.bus transport is simple and everyone is helpful if you ask.View attachment 123587
