I’ve been working under the car draining the coolant from the engine block. I noticed this which doesn’t look safe/ too rusty... looks structural.
Is it safe to drive the car with this part so rusty?

Im will be taking the car to a local garage anyway because replacing the part is probably beyond my capabilities but was wanting your opinions first.
Thanks

It is the front chasssis cross brace reinforcement. I would contact one of our breakers for another one, I am sure they would have one. Easy to change, just s few bolts. @spurs fan in a coupe probably has one.
Phew. I love it when it’s not as complicated as 1st imagined.
Thanks

Not sure how close you are to Basingstoke but @Lee has some nice refurbished powder coated ones available.

Not even an MOT failure. It is a bolt on part, NOT structural. You should be advised about it at worst.

So if it’s a non-structural bolt on part, could it be taken off for the MOT to avoid a pesky advisory? Just wondering....

Yes it could be taken off, but you would likely get an advisory because it was removed! Some Renault vehicle had a "Panhard rod" across the rear suspension which used to corrode like this but were not a testable item.

Here would be my mot tester answer.
Yes you could remove it and it wouldn't fail its fitted to lesson scuttle shake so as Tony says non structural.
But I would also say it wouldn't have to be removed to stop an advisory for corrosion if it was in half decent condition to start with .

Stephen.
