I was on my way back home today after finishing at work and this popped out and the car started vibrating very loudly. It is not going back on and I don't know if there is a way to fix it and get home or whether it would be safe to drive without this. The engine is very loud and is misfiring

Should note I was in traffic when this happened and the car doesn't get ragged about.

What to do???

That is a spark plug wire, normally it carries very high current or voltage to the spark plug.
It is also normally connected to the top of the spark plug with a spring loaded connection of sorts that keeps it from becoming disconnected.
Normally, there is nothing their to cause that part to "blow off" like that, except when the spark plug comes loose from its mounting in the head and then blows it off like that.
If you cant put it back, get somebody (a mechanic) to take a look that has a clue whats suppose to be going on.

You are correct the spark plug has shot out and took the wire out with it. I'm just wondering whether it would be safe to drive without a spark plug

Can't help on the mechanics mate but do you have breakdown recovery? They should be able to either fix or diagnose and at least get you home of to a garage.

You may have a spark plug that has come loose.
There should be a spark plug spanner in your tool kit in the boot.
You can use that to check if the plug is loose.
If it is you can tighten it (gently, don't want to thread the head or break the plug).

I probably didn't torque it down when I last replaced it but that brings me to my question. Is it safe to drive the car without a spark plug?

Is the lead ok, if not you will have to drive running on 3 cylinders which is not a good thing for a Catalytic converter.
How many miles are you from home Faheem?

Tony.

Thanks guys for all your help, the spark plug had fallen underneath near the radiator. After I put everything back together the spark plug wire clipped on but it wasn't a satisfying click, it is still easy to pull off. However, I started the car and there were no signs of a misfire and all 4 cylinder seemed to work correctly. I was only 5 miles from home, just got home with no more stops on the way.

Im going to change all 4 plugs tomorrow despite only doing this a year ago. Does anyone know what the best plugs are for the 1.9? Or is there little difference in the quality? Thanks.

Another issue that has started happening more that its old is that the car sounds like this on a morning start.

I've replaced the camshaft sensor and some vacuum hoses that were perished and I had no issues up until about two months ago.

Wondering whether these could be related?

It is only like this for 60 seconds at the very most and the revs are steady but it hesitates little if I push the throttle.

NGK Iridium , they are perfect for the M44!
You need to read some codes for the other issue!

No codes being thrown out that's the weirdest part.

What is the difference in these spark plugs?

Why would you buy the more expensive ones as opposed to the cheaper ones? Aside from longevity?
