Have you ever been into a Tyre House to get a tyre repaired which has a nail or similar in the tread only to be told it is too close to the edge of the tyre to repair it and you need to buy a new tyre?
This happened to me a couple of weeks ago where I used to work. The 2 tyre fitters are new since I worked there and the O/S/R tyre on the oil burner had a nail in the tread. This kid tries to tell me he could not repair it and that I needed a new tyre. He ended up repairing the tyre as I asked. If you need to know where you stand on this issue there is this my friend found on line.

Puncture location
British Standard BSAU159 also defines the requirements for safe minor car tyre puncture repair and its proximity to the sidewall. To remain compliant, we are only able to carry out tyre repairs to the central ¾ of the tyre (known as the minor repair area). If the puncture is situated outside of this area it is deemed too close to the sidewall to guarantee a safe and lasting minor repair.
In case of an unfixable tyre, it is important to always have spares ready. Stock up on extra tyres for safety

This is on the Kwik-fit website. It states this is the British Standard BSAU159 , but, it does not state, as often quoted by tyre fitters, that is "against the Law". Also if you read through the tyres section of the MOT Tester's Manual tyre repairs (plugs) do not even merit a mention so if it was a dangerous issue it would be part of the MOT Test.

Tony.

ps. It's funny that when I asked the fitter to show me written confirmation of what he told me, he couldn't.

Hi Tony, interesting info thanks, I guess you don’t have run flats on your Z4?

I have a 118i as my daily and at recent MOT they gave it an advisory “Nearside Rear Nail in tyre”. The tester said I would need a new tyre as run flats can’t be repaired, I was quoted an extortionate amount for a new tyre. I declined as I wanted to get the tyre checked at a couple of tyres centres, and shop around for the best price. The small nail head was in the central ¾ of the tread, but there was no way of telling the depth of the nail, otherwise the tyre was in good condition.

The info you posted doesn’t distinguish between run flats or normal tyres. The tyre centres I went to said run flats cannot be repaired, my only option was for a new tyre, have I been misled?

If you go to the Kwik-fit website where I found that into there is a section just below it about runflat tyre repair. Ask them to show you written proof of what they are telling you. I will ask this morning as I’m going into a tyre place.

Tony.

Run flats arent an automatic no to repair - I've asked the place I've used for years and they said they can repair them, depending on severity and location of the nail/screw.

Of course they dont make quite a smuch money out of the repair, and run flats are usually more expensive

It's the runflat makers that recommend they are not repaired. I guess that is due to damage that may be caused if they are used to drive some distance when deflated. Therefore I guess if they get a nail in but are not driven on fully deflated you can repair like any other tyre.
