Tyre fitting

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a tyre fitters in/near Hinckley that will swap tyres over (on loose rims) and balance them for not a lot?

Been down to Brittania tyres and they want £20 a corner which sounds quite steep as its only a 10 minute job!

Is £20 the going rate?

It totally wipes out the discount i'm getting on the tyres in the first place and they'd have it done in 30 minutes flat!

Whilst we're on this, has anyone tried out Kumho Ecsta HS51 tyres on their car yet? They seem to get a good write up?

I've been pricing up some Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. Naturally I went to camskill, tyreleader etc. First which came out at £370 delivered. Then you need to get them fitted.

In a rush I thought I'd try local fitters. I looked at ATS and I could get then for £376 fitted! What a surprise!

I possibly could, it's an 8.5j wheel on the back. Recommended sizes seem to range from 225 to 245. Extremes seem to be 215 or 255.

Would a 1.9 be ok with the 255 section? It would look good with a 255 on the back.

When we got the 2.2 it had a pair of 255/40R17 Contisport Contacts on the rear , front had one Firestone Hawk and one Accelera Alpha.
Quickly got rid of the fronts[to Yokohama] but rears left on for 10,000miles then changed to 245/45R17 [Contis] as we found the cost of the 255/40R17 way dearer than the 245/45R17, and could not get a pair of Yokohamas to match the fronts
Front wheels 7.5J rears 8.5J
We use a local tyre depot [ Lobitos ] who have great prices and service,for tyres, but tend to use Demon Tweeks in Wrexham for the 4 wheel alignment checks/corrections.

I always use Kwikfit in Hinckley. They have often checked things over for free, and when they have charged, they have been very reasonable, and done a great job. Overall, over many years and many cars they have been brilliant.

I always treat people with polite respect and express my gratitude, and have been known to pop back with a tin of Quality Street etc. There is some staff rotation so I can’t say that they necessarily remember me, but no matter.

When I had my Z3 wheels refurbished, they fitted the Uniroyal Rainsport 3s I bought online very carefully indeed.

One of the guys there told me that MIRA use them when they want tyres changed on cars being tested there. Good enough for me!

225 45 17 and 245 40 17 Avon ZV7 were 322 fitted and they will also come to your house and fit. Very helpful guys in the workshop. Got to get them to fit 2 tyres for the caravan soon as they are over 5 years old.

I was quoted £20 to remove a tyre before sending the wheel for refurb and £20 for refitting after!

Most garages really have no interest in encouraging bring your own as they want to sell you a tyre.

It’s interesting. We all have different experiences and you can sometimes just be unlucky in the day.

Once when Hinckley Kwikfit were crammed with work I went to Tyre Medics (who had been recommended to me) and stood in the reception for at least 15 minutes. I knew the two guys had clocked me but no one came to speak to me. I walked out thinking “stick with who you know”.

I also find face to face is best, so would recommend you try getting a price from Kwikfit, but pop in and have a friendly chat.

I pay £5 a tyre in Basingstoke, just call up a load and see what they say

I found that the 245/45 sections are cheaper too, also they don't do the HS51's in the 255 size either and I like to keep matching tyres if possible so I think it's the best fit I can get.
