Thanks for excepting me to the group. Just bought my first z4 and I'm looking for some help with my first issue. It's a 2003 z4 with the 2.5 motor. I cant get it to go into manual shift mode. Any tips where to start troubleshooting?

My 2003 3.0 Auto has “Manual” operation where you push the stick (selector) over to the left (you’ll pull yours over to the left) and then move the stick forward or back to change gear. It only moves one space forward or back from the central position and springs back to the centre position when you release it. Is this how your car works?

Tony.

I think first thing to do is get a diagnostic tool plugged in and run a diag on the box see if any fault code stored.

At rest when the lever is moved across to "manual" mode the display will show this.

As opposed to this when in "Auto" mode.

This tells you that ""Sport" mode is selected which is done automatically when you select "manual".
When in "manual" the display will show "M" and a number 1,2,3 etc. depending which is selected as below.

Does your car do all of this?

None of that happens. I'm guessing that what ever switch let's the transmission know I've moved the shift lever is either no good or the wiring / power for same is not there. Didn't know if this was a common problem and it's just a bad fuse or if I'm looking for a bigger problem. Waiting on a service manual now.

Yes it would point that way. Do you have a code reader to read the on-board computer?

Yes I do. Will scan tomorrow. Weather here has been crappy for working on a car in the driveway. Rain and 40* f. Great day for a drive in Europe.
