Hey guys,
I have a 1998 Z3 1.9 Automatic with 107k on the clock (2k in the last 4 weeks by me 🙃 )

OK, so it seems from the very complete and up to date service history & pile of receipts, that the auto transmission oil was never changed, and I think in first I hear a bit of a whine, only slightly though, but compared to the wife's auto Ford Focus it is noticeable to me.

Anyways, I have seen all the other posts on here regarding fluids etc and Tony's how to change it and simply have three questions...

1. How much ATF DIII do I need to buy? (Assuming that is correct) - I know I need the filter kit too!
( I don't want too much as that's wasted, and I don't want to have to leave off a week waiting for delivery of one more)

2. Is it better to go for Dexion VI now as that's the latest, or stick with DIII?
3. Any preferred brands?

I have seen the posts recommending Opie Oils but the reg check doesn't show Transmission fluids for my car, hence my questions.

Thanks

You will buy the oil in litre and half litre bottles. So if you buy 8 ltr. buy 7 x 1 and 2 x 0.5. You will likely have 1 full half litre left over which you'll able to return for a refund.

Tony.

ps. Buy locally to do this.

That makes perfect sense thank you Tony - I saw in some posts it says 6 litres and others no qty at all, so wanted to check as its not cheap stuff to buy.
I see the latest spec is this BMW VI - backwardly compatible apparently - is it worth changing up whilst I am at it?

Cheers

I just ordered the oil from our local Andrew Page outlet (Now euro Car Parts) at the time. As long as it is what is "listed" for your car it will be ok.
Don't get hung up on oil brands, you may be surprised to find a lot of oils are produced by few companies. Dexron 3 was recommended for mine, so that's what I used.

Tony.
