Hey I recently bought a BMW Z3 5 speed 2.5. I was wondering if anyone new how difficult of a task changing the transmission fluid is. The car has 150k and I'm assuming The transmission has never been serviced. My main question is do I need to change the transmission filter (or does it even have one). Iv watched some youtube videos and it doesn't look like they change the filter, but one video showed a filter change on a standard transmission. Iv only had experience with autos and I'm pretty sure manuals don't have filters. also wondering how much oil the transmission needs i keep hearing estimates of about 1.25 quarts but I feel like thats not enough. Any help would be great thank you!

No filter on a manual.

It's easy enough. Slacken the refill plug FIRST.

Then undo the drain plug, leave it 5 minutes to full drain, refit the drain plug and add oil until it starts to run from the refill plug. Fit the plug, that's it.

Cheap and cheerful Dexron ATF is fine for oil.

And torque the bolts to spec.
quite easy to destroy a case by overtightening

50nm if you have a torque wrench, decently hand tight if you don't.

I always wrap the tapered threads of the plugs with three turns of PTFE thread tape, otherwise they sometimes seep a little.
