Soo need to get organised if I’m going to get any track days done this year

On my first outing last year it was clear that that road tyres and brakes were the weak link on a summers day at Lydden hill (which is a very hard track on the car - apparently Brand is much easier on the car). Given time constraints it’s likely these two track I’d drive (although a Nurburgring trip tempting!)

So brakes are easy - a BBK is the obvious solution it’s also ‘Big cash’ - however some cooling ducts and proper pads (DS2500 or Performance Friction DTC) should do it - these pads are more ££ than EBC but EBC don’t last more than one day anyway (and they not as good as the marketing appears to make it) - so whilst the loss cost more they are consumables regardless of the size of brakes but at least the high end pads should give me more than one day.
I already have the 300mm discs but they just need more cool air (some ducts should help) and of course good fluid). @spurs fan in a coupe didnt manage to kill his brakes with this set up so it’s proven already.

I’ve seen that some DOT4 fluids are actually have better boiling points than DOT5 - need to research that.

It’s the tyres/wheels that I think need to look at more closely.

I run a ‘square’ set up currently (7,5j 17inch all around) and really like how it’s more balanced. The thing is with the 7,5j rims I have is that they can only take a max 235 wide tyre. It’s a odd size so limits rubber choices. And I’d like to not ruin these rims.

So I’m looking at getting 4 d 8,5j rims - basically some e36/46 rears so I can run 245 all around (I’ve tried some style 78 rears on the front and they fit well, no issues).

I’d probably stick with a 5spoke OEM wheel as they pretty light and cheap (I’d need to two sets to make 4x 8,5j and sell off the fronts for peanuts!)

I’m wanting to stick with 17inch- I may be wrong here but road tyres are cheaper and I like the way it drives on 17’s. I’m hoping that the same applies to track rubber...

In terms of rubber I’m looking for road legal semi slicks (to drive to track and back, will swap to road rubber for daily use).

In terms of brands Federal and Nangkang get a lot of mentions on Pistonheads- I believe there are various types of each brand so will look at what the e36/e46 guys use as similar weights to us.

where do people get track day tyres and brake pads from these days - camskill have a nice seqrch function...no idea where to look for pads, Demon tweaks, hack engineering, eBay (fakes?)

Anyone else planning on some track time looking at similar- all ideas welcomed!

I did a bit of investigation when I was "hoping" to do more track days, I settled for Motul RBF600 or FBF660 for brake fluid, the other thing is I wanted to have "cheap" tyres, didn't care if they looked good or not I was looking for cost effective good grip and I opted for a set of 16 inch wheels purely because I discovered they are lots of cheap "track" tyres on eBay for the standard 16 inch for the zeds, and I mean proper track tyres, coming out of surprlus from the Porscshe racing series etc - things like Michelin Sport cup 2 or the Toyo R888

Good call on second hand tyres. On eBay right now the only used tyres are full slicks - I couldn’t use those on the road and apparently they should only be used on a car that’s reinforced to handle them - big gripo_O

Looking on Camskill it out that the 235/40/17 is quite common for track tyres and actually cheaper than the 245:

Can’t seem to upload a pic but £80 each for Federal 595RSR (which is what @Lee I think?)

Just to keep this up to date with my findings-
The Federals have really mixed reviews (going out of round, cracking, over heating on track) so a bit worrying.

However have come across Yokohama AD08R - fitted for £90 a tyre and get very good reviews for track performance but also wet weather performance. Seems a no brainer at this stage.

My only dilemma now are rims. I picked up a set of genuine retro Racing Dynamics - 8j 17 et 33 with the idea of running 235 all around.
Always loved these wheels but very hard to find in e36 fitment (the fronts poke too much in 5 series fitment).
I was swayed by form over function and hoped they’d fit.

They do but they poke too much on the front for a square set up of tyres (could run 215/235 but want to rotate track tyres).

so instead of moving them on I’m thinking of using my M replicas - they are only 7,5j wide so I can only use a 225/45 track tyre (the track tyres are wider than normal) - this seems a bit narrow however given its track rubber and this is not a seriously powerful car it’s more than enough?

@Brian H what did you run on your Z3?

@Dino D sorry for the late reply.

Brake Pads

With reference to brake pads, The only EBC pads I had any joy with were the EBC Blue pads, barring this I was looking at a set (or more) a track day.

I think a totally underated pad is the PFC Z rated carbon metallic pad, best bang for buck I have had on the car, great feel and lasted 3-4 days for me which is saying something.

Tyres

The Yokohama AD08Rs are a brilliant tyre, stiffer sidewall to a standard tyre and will take an absolute beating, I had a set on the Z3 and currently have a set Z4M coming to the end of their life. I originally bought these as a wet weather tyre but have been nothing but surprised with their durability in the dry.

Just keep an eye on your pressures.

Hi Brian -PFC is Perfomance Friction? Heard about them on Pistonheads- where you do get them?
EBC just seems false economy for track at one set per day - happy with yellow on the road though.

Good to hear you like the AD08 - I can’t go for 888 as I’ll drive to track so want to get there and back in one piece if it rains(!) and also still drive on track if it rains midway on a day etc.
If I see the night before it will be total washout then I’ll switch to road tyres..

what sizes have you been running on the Z’s and how many miles do you think you got from them.
The wear looks nice and even - good driving!

I bought the PFC pads from the following company

http://www.asptrading.co.uk/

give them a call or drop them a line and they should be able to get you a set for your car.

The tyre sizes I run on the cars are staggered are sets,

Z3 = 17” 225 front & 245 rear
Z4 = 18” 225 front & 255 rear

I know a good few folks that run square set up but this is something I’ve not got round too. The tyre above is a front tyre, it’s taken a bit of setting up of the front camber to get the wear this even....

hi @Brian H - I’m coming to the conclusion that if I want track perform and not doing a BBK I need to sacrifice noise levels and run a track pad.
Pads that do both road and track don’t last that long or fade quickly on the set up I’m running.

Now I’m not averse to swapping out pads for track days as I’ll be swapping wheels over may way.

been looking around and the Carbon Lorraine range of sintered pads seems to be amazing - no fade, take abiuse and last. But they are noisy and not be used in winter.
Prices are not bad either, certainly less than things like Pagid RS29 etc which could still be noisy for road.

oh and the biggie - because they are metallic they do NOT need bedding in/transfer layer every time you change them over for track...

Of course they are abrasive when cold so lots of road use will wear discs...

Just wondering if you’ve heard anything about them?

@Dino D, I ran the Performance Friction pads full time, for me they were very good for both applications and lasted a long time (relatively). I’m not a fan of swapping pads around as you will have to bed them in and to be honest it is a faf.

The Carbon Lorraine's get a good write up and so do the RS29s both these come with a price tag too.
