just arrived back home in sunny Wales, after a brill week touring.its pic heavy but if you like to think of planning a trip to the Alps this might give you a few ideas. This time because of time we hired a car in Geneva it was £600 for the week we could of got a skodafor a third of the price, but a soft top for the Alps is a must and between four of us it wasn't so bad the return flight was £98 so that was a bonus. It was a little cramped and storage was at a premium so we all had soft luggage and Sarah and I went with hand luggage only.but we still had to cram it into the boot carefully. Here's our trusty steed, not quite @FRANKIE m

The first day we took our time and drove to interlaken,a lovely drive around the French side of lake Geneva towards Montrose and then over the mountain to our hotel. Its only 20 mins from ther up to the Eiger, and I've read so many stories about it it's a must on my stops, this is the first time we've actually taken the cable car to the nearby mountain to gaze fully at the famous North face and the jungfrau railway station the highest in Europe, you need to take out a morgage to ride the train inside the mountain, maybe I ought to start doing the lotto the cable car was worth the £45 to get to the top and back it's a 3 hour walk back down if your feeling fit.but it looks lovely.

It's hard to believe but the station is on the skyline between these two peaks, from the top you can gaze down at the jungfrau glacier

From here we had to push on to Grimsel pass and the furka pass on to Disentis via another beautiful pass to our hotel for the night.Next morning it was back to Andermatt and over to Airolo via the Gottard pass, make sure you take the old one on the cobbles it's crazy .

watch out for the locals

from here we drove up the nufen pass and stopped at the top to watch an e type pour it's coolant all over the parking,it was one of a number of classics struggling over.looked like to much hassle for me but I take my hat off to them.We then drove via some scenic detours to the ski resort of Verbier.Part two to follow...

Bloody hell, I would rather have spent that at the locale bar and looked up at the mountain....;)

I forgot to mention when we were on top of Grimsel pass there's a little road on your right with a big sign with a traffic light, when the light turns green your allowed on a single track road with a few passing places it snakes along side of the ridge for about 4 miles up to another resovoir and restaurant ,amazingly we were followed up by an immaculate Z///M coupe in estoril blue he went to the restaurant and we went to the dam where we came across a z3m roadster the pics are on my mates phone I'll try and get them.when we went up to the parking to comeback down we met the coupe coming to the dam where he parked next to the roadster, man was I frustrated, you have a little time to pull over on the way down ,we took it to have a snowball fight in July lol

Verbier is a very busy ski resort in the winter and it still has a summer season but hotels are much cheaper. it's the perfect place to start our accent of the Grand st Bernard pass....its a beautiful drive down from the resort and then you start the long climb up G s Bernard ,it's the one at the start of the "Italian job" and you can't help yourself humming the tune. Im just amazed that Napolen took his army of 40,000 men over it including artillery in 1800. You wind down into the Aosta valley and toward Mont Blanc and Courmayeur where you start the climb up the Petite st Bernard pass "which I like better" .we got speaking to some Italian guy in the valley and he recommended a reasturant on the pass called " lo riondet " we duly stopped and had a really nice lunch. We set off over the mountain to Bourg Saint Maurice the Martian. There we turned right over a pass I'd never done before and what a gem it turned out to be Cormet de Roselend,we didn't have time to visit torrent des glasiers, but it's on my list for next time.the road was magical and the lake was a stunning blue ,man I could of sat there all day with a beer and a butty,I was happy.Unfortunatly we had to move on to Beaufort for the night. We checked into the hotel about 6.30 then went on a reccy of the road the Tour de France was travelling the next day ,to pick a spot ,cars, campers and bikes already in for the night .I found my vantage point and decided that it would be impossible to park the next day on the hill so they would drop me off and window shop at the resort at the top,win win .The next day was taken up by the tour, it was brilliant much bigger than I imagined a party all day and so friendly. .It had forecast rain on the Saturday but it started fine so I decided to make a bid for something that has been on my list for years. We headed up col de la Madeleine ,it's really nice and we once followed a snow plough in the Z over it :nailbiting: .We drove over down into the town, sat for a coffee ,bought a sandwich and a drink and headed for Lacettes Montvernier ,my dream.we drove into the little village at the bottom and there they were clinging on to the mountain.I supose I had built them up so much in my mind I could of been dissapointed......I wasn't it was the best I didn't want it to end,the only way it could of been better if I had been driving my Z.Theres a little church at the top of the Lacettes that you have to walk across a field to get to, we sat there and ate our picnic looking down at the road,it as lovely.Too soon we had to go but the road kept on giving all the way to the top,it's narrow and twisty and clings to the edge of the mountainside with the occasional overhang of rock that looks like it could fall at any time:arghh: .Once over we drove down into the valley back up to Evian les bains for the last 2 nights for a rest.

This was a valley to explore next time

The photo doesn't do justice to the colour of this lake

This was the view if I got fed up of looking at bikes

Great photos Hugh. Would be a Bu--er if you met a car coming the other way on that road. I am toying with the idea of going back to the Alps next year AGAIN. Maybe stay in Livigno for a week as it is a tax haven and really cheap Petrol
