If they're worn enough to warrant changing Dave I would expect that there would be some movement vertically or horizontally and either one could cause a knocking on uneven surface. Much like slight play in an anti-roll bar link ball joint.

Tony.

When I refreshed the rear end on mine I just went with what GSF Car parts supplied which was labelled Lemforder IIRC. Seem to work well enough...

Perhaps I should have qualified what I posted with "assuming you fit them properly"

I would say it depends how old they are. I would change them when changing the shocks which for me would definitely be over 50k or on the 10 year mark at least. I suppose they could assist with road handling issues either steering or suspension. After all they are made of rubber and as we all know rubber starts to perish with age and also wear

if its not broke dont fix it, i have an E46 touring and i cant find this clunking noise its really irritating so far changed drop links, wishbones, trackrods inner and outer , still persists , i am looking at anti roll bar bushes , and then the top mounts i think, i just keep chucking cash at it at the moment so once you start you cant stop.
