My normal daily driver is off the road at the moment so have been using my 1.9 z for work , took another engineer out in it today on a site visit he said a very nice car seems reasonably quick but just doesnt sound it , we all know about the wonderful sound track of the big 6 but does any one think the same as my collegue that the 1.9 just doesnt sound quick , mine is totally standard in every way

I'd be inclined to agree. That said, the 1.9 is not intended to sound quick, in my view, that's not what it's about. Easily cured though with an aftermarket back box.

Have to admit my m43 with standard bmw exhaust is quite throaty but not that loud.
Lynne's m44 auto with an aftermarket exhaust was quite rippy but the way the auto box delivers the power ( keeps in the power band to a degree) droned really bad under normal cruising ( better when pressing on) reckoned would have been better with a manual box .
The horrible drone was doing my head in so it's thanks to ( @spurs fan in a coupe ) is now running a genuine bmw rear section and sounds all the better for it.
Again these things are like most things motoring down to personal preference.

Stephen.

I agree but I find it fascinating how a lot of people equate noise with speed , personally i prefer understated

Noise goes for nothing the amount of times I've been in work and heard something belting through the gears ( from half a mile away) and then some Corsa comes charging past doing about 20 mph giving it all noise and no go.

Obviously high power cars tend to sound a bit loud and sporty with pops and bangs on overrun but that's generally because they have some large capacity engine trying to clear 4/500 plus bhp out of its pipes.
In my opinion
A small engine with a noisy exhaust sounds exactly what it is ( a small engine with a loud exhaust) if you want it to sound good no substitute for large capacity and big bhp output.

Ive always thought my 2.8 {with factory exhaust} sounds good at idle and low speed or dragging out without shifting down but can get alittle rattlely at higher RPMs. would like it to be throaty but absolutely do not want droning.
