Hi All,
my Z3 was recently diagnosed with a faulty valve in the throttle body, & was told this involves replacing the whole throttle body,
is this correct? And if so who supplies them. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you will have to be much more specific with what part of the valve, what's wrong, etc if you want to see if it's repairable. I asume you are talking about the large valve that controls airflow through the throttle body?

Yes airflow valve, the car is driving almost in limp mode at the moment, with eml on

Hi Rudyrov, thanks for your interest,
Yes the large air flow valve, eml on, and car runs as if in limp mode. Have been told BMW don't stock the throttle body anymore, but does anybody do a recon exchange?

Is this the drive by wire throttle body on the later engines such as the 3.0?

Depending on where you live you can pick them up used or there are some after market ones about.

Use RealOEM and find the part number before looking on Ebay or a few places.

Hi Bradpolian, I am sorry but I am not sure if I can help you further, I don't understand what is wrong given your description.

Let's start with some basic questions so that we can try and sort out your problem.
  • What year is your Z3?
  • What size engine does it have?
  • Does it have an accelerator cable going to the throttle body?
  • Can you please provide the trouble code number and description?

Diagnosis from a garage can often be incorrect - your symptoms could also be that of a bad air leak in one of the rubber bellows, causing a very weak mixture - try looking at it yourself.

Get a can of carburettor cleaner and spray it where you hear the “hissing” coming from with the engine idling and listen for revs increasing. You will have found the leak.
