I'm sure I did a post on this a few years ago but never really got the answer I was looking for.
When I first removed the wheel arch liner on my zed I ended up breaking 2 of the studs that hold the ABS and Brake sensor wires in place. When removing the plastic nuts the threaded studs just sheared off. I know now (thanks to @mrscalex) that a better approach would have been to cut the plastic nuts off with a rotary tool and cutting disc in an attempt to try and save the studs.
I was considering self-tapping screws but the risk then is you'd need a bigger self tapper in the future.
I was watching a Redish Motorsport restoration video and noticed a similar thing happen to them when removing the undertray of a vehicle. They mentioned they would drill it out and put a rivet stud in its place.
Rivet nuts are common but trying to find an external rivet stud and a tool to go with it proved quite challenging
Eventually came across this on ebay:
Not cheap but it's a quality tool and has worked perfectly -
Just need to grind the old sheared off stud flat and then drill it out and rivet this in place.
As I fitted cruise control to my zed (and it didn't come standard) - the bracket for the cruise control motor was held in place with zip ties for the past 3 years. I was contemplating welding the bracket but I didn't want to have welds and weld splatter in the engine bay so these rivet studs worked perfectly here as well:
