Thing is Andy, I listen to a stream of a Country Music station from DFW (Dallas, Fort Worth) and there was no mention of this on the radio at all.

Tony.

Your brakes are next to useless and you're a passenger. This can happen here so be careful when it's icy.
Agreed. And that's exactly why I always leave plenty of room in front if my car when standing in traffic and always watch what is happening behind me. Don't know if it's of any use when it comes to such a situation, but at least it gives you a better feeling.
These are the two things I fear most when I'm on the road, someone coming from behind unable to brake or unaware of the traffic, and wildlife accidents.

Driving distractions and undue care and attention to the current road conditions are the over-riding cause, the ice was a contributor. Drivers of cars, vans, trucks etc are often distracted by in cab stuff such as music, phones etc and are simply not aware of the surroundings and potential hazards ahead and the external weather conditions that may affect the ability to stop in a timely manner. There was a case a few years ago, similar to the footage, whereby an articulated truck ploughed into the back of stationary traffic at speed causing serious injury and fatalities. On investigation the truck driver had been on his phone to his mum for circa 30 minutes, at point of impact he'd not recognised the pending disaster and hadn't even lifted of the throttle. In essence, whilst at the wheel, he was, in his mind, sat chatting to his mum at home.

The main reason I never listen to music on my motorbike, too distracting.

I am originally from the Pacific Northwest but also lived in Texas for awhile. An ice storm is an amazing thing that cant be explained without being seen.

If you watch the one video you can see sparks coming off the truck against the center barrier. He obviously knew it was happening and did everything he could to stop but still hit the cars at full speed.

Agreed. Mine is hitting large quadrapeds - cows, horses . . . camels. The bonnet takes the legs out, the torso comes through your windscreen. Messy. (shivers)
