Just a general question. Did BMW do a hot climate thermostat for the z3 that opens up at a cooler temperature or are they all the same?

From what I've read they all open at 97* the later Z3 engine thermostats also have an electronic opening function controlled by the DME.

I hear people in hot climates change the rad switch so the fan comes on earlier. (I mean very hot climates 40+)

There is an option in the datasheet # S823 and S283Afor the Z3.
cars that are UAE and Tropical Africa specd have it.
the difference i see is the deflection pulley or at least that is what TIS told me.
searched it on real oem and found this diagram.
not sure about the actual difference…..
But this is the only difference for hot climates.
no thermostat from what i see

That reminds me, I'm pretty sure I've read you can change the pulley size for higher flow rates as well. Don't know if it's a factory thing or not.

@Zephyr That might refer to the aircon as thats the pulley it uses.

What you can do is drill 1,2 or even 3 x 3mm holes in the thermostat “plate”. This allows water to circulate slightly before the stat opens. We used to use this trick when building engines for F2 stock cars.

But isnt there some optimum temperature where the engine and oil work well together? I guess it is designed this way. Less heat isnt always ideal… imho for a road car at least.

The only difference is how quickly it reaches that temperature, whether it’s a road car or a race engine it will eventually get to its operating temp when the stat opens and it will stay in that operating window.

We obtained this gem from a Tuning company from Boston, UK. called Vegatune back in the 80s. It worked for us.
