Tony as you correctly say, every manufacturer is heading that way, look at Porsche and the changes they made! At least BMW still offers a 6 cylinder engine!

I cannot see the point of a sports car which is slower than its predessesor and has a soft (easy to break into) top?

Most of the current E89's are 4 pot, only 6 pots when you get to the 30 and 35 models - so this is something that's been happening for quite a few years across all models.

Taken in proportion though (and going by the Wikipedia stats, the 4 pot turbo'd 28i produces 240ish bhp which is only 15 behind the 30i. So you get similar power, and the 4 pot is quicker to 60... Never gonna be as smooth as the 6 pot, but emissions and fuel consumption are much better which is what the government cares more about!

Both are far too big for a 2 seater bundle of fun, but it would be the Jag for me every time

You’ve overlooked the E89 23i....that was a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder that was the entry level model until the 20i 4 cylinder turbo replaced it. It was probably the biggest seller in the early years of production when sales volumes were at their highest so I’m not sure it would be accurate to say 4 pots outnumber 6’s

Fair comment, but wasn't really that focused on the percentages, just that 4 pots are becoming more prevalent and smaller engines will be a continuing trend across all manufactures.
