I'm not too sure if I'm honest Tim. It will come into effect in the middle of my holiday so I'll have to do some homework between now and then in my own time to get up to speed with it. When computerisation came in it was a big thing to adapt to and this will be the same I'm sure but we will all cope, case of having to. This time next year we'll all be wondering what all the fuss was about, or, I'll have thrown in the towel

Looks like I will find about any changes soon, the X1 will be MoT'd last week in May, it expires on 25th June.

This will done at the local BMW dealer as the car has MOT Protect and a Comprehensive Extended Warrantee.

The Z3 is done at my local Independent dealer [who is an ex BMW Master Tech]

I have always had them done at the earliest permitted date.

I read that and it made me chuckle maybe its common that those items are missing.

so what happens if you get a dangerous defect. Is that now down to an unscrupulous garage that you have to now pay them to do a repair that previously you could do yourself?

For example: corroded brake pipes.

Also what about the MOT test stations that do not do repairs. how does the dangerous defect get fixed?

It will be NO different from what it is now as far as I know Pete. The only difference may be this "Database" that highlights to the Police any vehicles which are on the road after receiving a "Dangerous" fail. I suppose it's like the DVSA giving an HGV a GV9 which meant (maybe still means) that a vehicle is prevented from continuing it's journey and has to be recovered to a place of repair.

There IS and as far as I know there will be NO WAY a testing station can prevent a vehicle leaving a testing station.

Can't they just refuse to give you the keys, as what will you do ? call the police to say they wont let me drive my dangerous car away?

Otherwise seems s a bit of a strange message.. It's too dangerous to drive, but you can drive it home and fix it?

It’s going to pose problems for car dealers who don’t have MoT testing themselves (most don’t).
They use the MoT as a zero cost way to fault find rather than servicing the car properly beforehand. So, if they now have to recover cars after a failure it leaves them with additional costs.
Will they continue to takes cars for MoTs? If they don’t, they risk also losing the servicing too.
It annoyed me intensely when I got a failure on a fault I’d told them about and rectify as I dropped the car off. I expected them to do the service and inspection before the MoT. They’re just using the MoT as cheap diagnostics.

Maybe not Tony but I can see the main dealers making you sign a disclaimer stating that the car you are about to drive away is dangerous and not fit to use on the road, this will put undue pressure on the owner to have the work carried out by the garage the car is at!

You're absolutely correct Brian, it's always the case with D.O.T. but don't forget most of this crap has been put together under EU directives.
It even applies where I work, they have recently produced a service sheet which the person doing the car has to complete. A lot of it is inaccurate and totalling wrong and it adds up to 15 minutes to the job at least.

thats just another 15 minutes at £XX per hour labour to the customer, at least it will be in the garages that don't GaF

I get very disalusioned with the motor trade Pete mainly down being forced to police the Testing service ourselves rather than by a Government Authority like it used to be. I will be happy to walk away from it and leave it in the rear view as they say.
There will no doubt be some issues arise with the new stuff and we'll have access to a new training "site" after Aprin 19th. which may clarify some of it. We'll see.
