Soooo....in preparation for a single session at Silverstone lol I’ve had yellow stuffs fitted and new discs.

Naturally as a single session is so demanding :) I need to do brake fluid too. What’s the consensus from our Z3 ‘driver’.

I’ve got dotty looking at dot ratings. It seems that 5 is better but can’t be mixed with 4. Them some 4’s have a higher boiling point than some 5’s etc!

The 2.8 seem to like a brake pad BBQ (having seen @spurs fan in a coupe car at Lydden) so might as well get a proper fluid in.

I’m also hoping to do more than a single session or parade lap this year so happy to do it right if cost friendly (which will be an improvement over the few road miles and single parade lap I managed last year!)

As far as l was aware, DOT 5 is not recommended for vehicles with ABS.

As it’s a silicone based fluid it has different characteristics such as compressibility and is not ideal for ABS systems that have been calibrated for DOT 3/4 fluid.

The boiling point of DOT 4 is 230 deg C.
l doubt that you will reach that temperature unless you are riding the brake pedal.

get Dot5 get a different colour, (blue rather than yellow or vice verse) and bleed the whole system until you see the new colour at all the callipers.
Is it now possible to get blue fluid? I belive Super Blue was banned

You can get high temp DOT 4 fluid, I have used 5.1 for a number of years with no ill effect.

No, Brian it's not. Only checks re brake fluid are that the level warning light is not illuminated, the level in the reservoir is above minimum and that there no obvious external leaks.

If more than one pump or compressor drive belt is fitted as standard, only one of the belts needs to be present and/or in a satisfactory condition.
F.
Pumps and Compressors
1.
Check the condition of the pump or compressor drive system.
1.
A pump or compressor drive system missing or defective.
Hydraulic brake fluid level checks are confined to transparent reservoirs or where an indicator is fitted. Reservoir caps should not be removed.
A brake fluid warning lamp may be a combined lamp for other aspects, such as worn brake pads or parking brake applied.
Inspection of the brake fluid warning lamp does not apply to Class 3 vehicles.
G.
Hydraulic Systems
1.
Check fluid reservoirs for:
a.
presence of cap
b.
fluid level.
2.
Check that the brake fluid warning lamp is not illuminated or defective.
1.
A fluid reservoir:
a.
cap missing
b.
level below the minimum indication when this is shown.
2.
A brake fluid warning lamp is illuminated or inoperative.

My son's somewhat modified Z4M Coupé works well on Super Blue/Amber and Blue Stuff pads. He's about to upgrade to AP Racing brakes but not through any fluid problems, but to maintain performance without overheating the pads and discs.
