Yes it is, and only for the US market. The bearings were noisy in mine so I made a blanking plate for the cyl. head and binned it.

I was given a home made blanking plate by one of the members on the .net forum with a step by step photo instructions on how to fit, however l'm not going to fit it until the motor bearing goes which l expect it to one day. This overcomplicated gizmo was designed entirely for the American market to keep down emissions but you can remove it completely without any issues and will still pass an mot in the UK no probs

That's an air pump, it blows air into the exhaust just after start up. This helps burn off any unburned fuel caused by a rich start up mixture, at least that's the theory.
Usually what happens here is the chrome valve next to it fails and lets hot gas go to the pump, this causes a failure.

Can you post a pic of the plate and some dimensions it could be something I could knock up

Sorry Hugh question phrased wrong as usual, I know what it does, I just wondered why you would remove it, obvious answer its broken and its not a UK requirement.

Apparently the hot gases from the exhaust come back through and condense and then the water just sits on the bearings and corrodes them until it either stops working or squeals on start up.

@t-tony As you have done it I assume this version on the Z3 is fully mechanical and does not need to be mapped out to stop the EML showing on the dash?

I know most versions are linked to the O2 sensor and only work when the temp is below 60 degrees, so only gets used on start up. I know on the T5 you can blank the EGR but it has to be mapped out for the same reason.

P.S. thinking about it this piece of kit is no different to the software used by VW

Yes that's the thing. You take off the valve from the cylinder head and draw round the shape of it on a piece of 3-4mm steel cut it shape, mark and drill the 2 holes, fix over the studs and put the nuts back. The small vacc. hose can be plugged by pushing a ball bearing down 1/2" or so. I can knock you up a blanking plate if you would like me to Hugh.

Tell you what mate, please PM me your address and I'll take one job off your list for you. It'll take you about 10mins to remove the smog pump and fit the blanking plate! 2, 13mm nuts, unplug the cable and tie it up then plug the vacc. pipe.:)
