Thank you all for your help on the battery drain. It was proved to be the new radio/cd fitted by Halfords.I now have a problem (found during MOT) with the driver side airbag. The diag
Re BMW Z3 T264 SPB

Diagnostic tests carried out to airbag system on above vehicle.

3 faults were initially present please see PDF 1.

Airbag system was reset and rechecked after test drive around block.

2 of the 3 faults reappeared please see PDF 2

Suspect the other fault which was not present on second test will reappear quickly due to noise coming from “clock spring” area of steering column.

Therefore work required

1/ Seat removed passenger side and wiring checked to seat occupancy sensor. Suspect sensor has failed due to common problem with BMW of that years.

2/ Gain access to satilitte sensor for drivers side airbag. Suspect sensor failure but wiring needs checking as potential wiring issues due to potential water leaks into cockpit.

3/ Replacement of “clock spring” assy due to noise coming from unit

Any thoughts gentlemen ? It looks expensive to me........!

Problem with driver's side airbag, so why does it require passenger seat removal to check occupancy sensor? What age is the car and does it have a passenger airbag?
I would get the clock spring replaced first and codes cleared before doing any other airbag repairs..In my experience if a clock spring is making any noise it is usually faulty. A secondhand one would my first choice. Try asking Andy @spurs fan in a coupe .

If the noise your hear from the steering wheel sounds like a squeak, bit like a mouse, the universal joints at the bottom of the steering rack could be the culprit. Ask me how I know that one:whistle: I changed my clock spring first but the noise was still there;)

In the US there is a Technical Service Bulltin (TSB) for the pretensioner wiring under the seats, BMW part # 61-12-9-118-122 requires soldering into the existing harness and replacing the connector on the explosive charge. My understanding it has to do with corrosion developing on the connectors under the seats, the control module is very sensitive to resistance in the circuit. When I was rebuilding my car I had the dreaded Airbag Light and at the vehicle inspection they said it had three codes, 2 for the harness per the TSB and 1 for a pretensioner. I installed 2 harness and had both pretensioners refurbished. After installing the harness & refurbished pretensioners and clearing the codes, no more Airbag light. You can tell if the self-check is okay if the Airbag light goes out during starting (the light will blink off) and then comes back on. Codes in the Airbag circuit have to be reset with a tool and will not reset if the battery is disconnected.
