This week we took in a facelift 2.2 in stunning Estoril Blue, one of the most striking Z3 colours.

This Zed I’ve noticed over the years being very low on the rear, almost like it’s about to pop a wheelie, so our priority was to get the rear end sorted with some other little upgrades.

First thing to do is get her into position for lifting up.

Once in the air and the arch liners out you can see how tired those beam bushes really are.

That gap at the top should be the same size at the bottom.

Already sporting some nice Bilstein shocks.
Now we enter full disassembly mode.

The exhausts on the facelift models are normally a one piece system with the front flange being in a poor state, because of this we don’t touch it and remove the subframe with the exhaust still in place.

Disconnecting both drive shafts is required.

prop nuts removed using the double spanner method.

and here’s those pesky M6 cap head bolts. I haven’t had one round for a long time and today was a pain because one did. Out came the angle grinder to remove the head.

On removal of the handbrake cables it’s safe to say Dave got his moneys worth here.

now you can see both swing arms removed.

Later in the week I’ll begin the transfer over of drive shafts, brake mechanisms and lines. This is what takes longer than the removal.

Diff was looking a little crispy. Nothing we can’t sort. I say crispy because @davesport2.2 is still having Counciling from the word crusty.

Diff bush is now removed. Didn’t give us much of a fight at all.

now we begin the rebuild of the new shinny bits. Fresh arms and new bearings with shields.

This concludes today’s play time. I’ll do a few updates during the week to keep myself out of trouble.

So today we did some more strip down. We’re still waiting for parts so we couldn’t make huge progress.

stripped the old swing arms down ready for whoever’s next after powder coating.

We also removed all the rear braces. There was a top and bottom Bertini brace. I’m going to powder coat them for Dave so let him know if you want them.

We also removed the old fuel tank straps. They were very crispy. They had also been removed and someone added some extra padding.

Whilst disassembling the old arms we noticed they had been removed once before, couldn’t understand why, but once we removed the hub the bearing dust cover was already trashed and the bearings fell out. For this reason it’s why we fit new FAG bearings.

Also both bolts holding the handbrake guide sheared and one on the other arm. We find this is really common and takes a good hour or two to drill out.

To add to the fun one brake line was moments away from splitting and cracked open when we removed it. Luckily we keep a fresh pair of BMW steel lines in stock for this reason.

Using two sockets clamped in a vice you can get the perfect radius’s.

Despite all the set backs we did actually make some progress. The new arms are built ready to go now.

Don’t want that Nut coming undone. Not that much would happen if it did.

Just waiting on parts to arrive now.

This is hopefully going to make such a difference. It's not until work like this is done that you really find out about the condition of your car. Great you're catching it all though

Today we got another good session in. Most parts have arrived now so it was full steam ahead.

First step was to bolt the painted diff onto the new subframe. Also sporting a new powerflex bush.
FA3B5890-85BE-40B8-A75F-E4A24F6CCAD5.jpeg

Bit fiddlery with two people to fit over the exhaust but we got there in the end. I took a nice close up shot showing how high the beam bush should sit. Most cars arrive sat on the plate.

torqued the diff bolt and beam pins. This allows us to finish building the swing arms.

We left the callipers off at this stage and the brake lines so it was a bit lighter to lift by hand.

Now the hardware is on we made another brake line so he’s now got a pair of new lines. These are from BMW and they cost £32 for the pair. Much better than homemade copper repairs.

You can also see his old Beam bushes in the background, these were shot.

now I’m waiting on the final piece of the puzzle, Yellow braided brake lines.

Well done the Zed Shed crew another one saved, I don’t think people realise how much work goes into this back beam refurb, these Zeds are getting on a bit now and need some TLC before the rot sets in 😳 don’t put this refresh off do it ASAP.

So to close this build out we can report the owner is very happy. The braided lines didn’t arrive in time which was a shame, turns out there’s been an outbreak out my local sorting centre.

So with the original brake lines on a test drive was in order. We actually had a shed first, a very funny bobo, for the eagle eyed amongst us in a photo above you can see a brake pad was put in the wrong way round, just goes to show we’re all human and these things can happen.

Test drive went well only another brake pad sensor to fiddle with, seems these oxidise very quickly, quick wd40 and a quick on, off treatment the light went out.

Another happy Zedder with no saggy rear end.
