According to the Owners Manual I should be using a 0w - x / 5w-x . I don't understand
this code. I'm assuming the x relates to an unknown and it refers to a range of oils.
What make and would you recommend for a synthetic oil for a 2.8 Z3 ?

That refers to viscosity at varying temperatures. Look it up in Wiki and it will explain everything, there is a chart for it.

5w-40 will probably cover you but look at the temps for where you live. Use oil that meets the BMW001 standard, and there are a variety of favorites out there, it's like asking what is your fav ice cream flavor! :)

Unless you have something exotic under your bonnet then 5w/40 covers the majority of Z3 engines. Some people will say 5w/30. But 5w/40 is what Opie Oils (respected source) say for my cars.

The important thing then is that it says compliant with BMW LL-04 on the back of the can.
