The photo shows the top of the strut on my 1999 2.8. Not a good look I know.

can I get some thoughts and suggestions on the best replacements for the vehicle please.

The rear shocks are original factory and need changing too.

Hello,

It would appear that the centre sleeve has separated from the outer rubber, Strut tops are readily available from many online suppliers with varying quality, however as a good quality aftermarket 'Manufacturer' I would recommend MEYLE. When changing the rear shocks I would definitely replace the rear shock top mounts again using MEYLE HD.

MEYLE also do the rear shocks.

As a recommendation, all of the required items can be sourced from AtoZ in Halifax, 01422 321000 ask for 'Asam' tell him you are a member of the Zroadster forum and he will discount for you. They are mail order specialists.

While doing the job, remember that BMW supply reinforcement plates to fit between the strut mount and the strut tower.

There are several choices for better than original rear mounts, the ones for a E46 convertible are a popular upgrade for increased durability. There are also reinforcement plates for the rear mounts which are installed on the inside to sandwich the sheet metal between the mount and the reinforcement plate. The front reinforcements are installed on top of the strut mount before it is (the strut) installed.
I did a complete refresh on my 97 2.8's suspension in the fall and now that I have put some miles on it I could not be happier with the results, car rides and drives like new.
