Suggestions needed for horrible clock

Hi all.

I have a pre-facelift Z3 1.9 with the old dash and the horrible, digital clock. I say horrible as it’s dark and some of the diffusing film has worn off so it’s not even readable now. I don’t want to do the onboard Computer swap with stalk as it’s still in a terrible location to see and as such, was thinking of just swapping it with something else - but wondered if anyone had any novel ideas / suggestions / things they have seen themselves.

I am genuinely at a blank. I was thinking initially some kind of lcd, on a PCB board using a 3D printed frame but again remembered it’s not really in a convenient place to look at. I don’t have switches next to it, only a tray so perhaps just a couple usb ports? Maybe convert to an analogue clock?

I've seen wristwatches modified to fit in the OEM space, other than that I have seen replacements on eBay but they are pricey.

How about a cycle trip computer? The sensor could be mounted close off one of the inner driveshaft couplings, where it should not cause any balance problems. It would however be difficult to find a better position for the display, but with a decent display it should be easily visible, and it is only a toy anyway!

I have a pre-face 1.9 with the square digital clock.

I'm changing it for the round analogue clock from face lift car. Changing the panel containing the clock and heater controls.

Plenty of THESE on the Bay for not much money, just stick on, battery lasts 5 years.

I changed the whole centre console, to the facelift, was quite straightforward all the wiring is the same colour code.

Are the switches from pre facelift digital clock facia the same dimensions as the switches in the post facelift analogue clock panel? To my eye they look slightly different. Don't want to buy the analogue panel and find that my switches don't fit!

Thanks Trevor. Thought they looked different. Pretty good considering my eyesight really! 😁

I took a cheap black square wristwatch and reworked in into the frame of the clock. Looks great - but needs to be opened every 6 months when the clocks change. Small price to pay to see the time on bright days.
