Do I take the three small screws out of the back of the steering wheel to release it?

No you’ve misunderstood! I meant yes for @t-tony! Don’t remove the screws until someone who knows responds!!!

I do know that if the steering wheel isn’t removed correctly that the airbag may go off.

Airbag is completely removed, the only thing holding the steering wheel to the car is that bit cable?

The three screws hold the split ring to the back of the steering wheel. There is a plug on the other end of the flat "tape" cable that you need to release from the steering column.

Can you tell me what happens if I take the three screws out will it be ok?
I wish to send the steering wheel away for recovering.

What it important is tbat you secure the slip ring from turning from the position where you removed it from the steering wheel. Secure it with some tape to stop the "clockspring" from unravelling. If it has you'll need to buy another, if not it should be ok.

Tony.

Will I not remove it by taking the three screws out?

Yes you will but it still doesn't want to turn. It needs to go back on in the same position that it comes off. One part is fastened to the wheel but the inner is anchored onto th steering column.

I agree Tony but I’m trying to remove the steering wheel so I can get it recovered, but this “clockspring” is stopping the wheel being free.
I’m not trying to put it back together..... yet.
