Hi all
I need to remove my steering wheel, I'm sure I have seen a thread on here ref removing the steering wheel and isolating the air-bag by disconnecting the battery first, then your good to go but I cant find it now I need it
Can anyone advise if this is correct, as in disconnect battery and then no injuries o_O

Cheers

When I changed my wheel I disconnected the battery and waited 30 mins before removing the airbag. No problems. Good luck.;)

- disconnect battery
- have a brew (although its not really needed to wait more than a minute)
- remove the airbag - theres 2 holes on the back of the wheel, depending on the type of wheel you have depends whether you need to undo - - screws with a T20 wrench or push the holding brackets in.
- remove airbag, disconnecting wires as you go
- straighten wheel completely and lock with steering lock
- undo nut (retighten to 60 on the torque wrench (or very tight))
- remove wheel.

5 minutes of a job at the most.

When jack from Royal Steering changed our wheel he just pulled the connector onto the slip ring ad then plugged it back in when the new wheel was fitted. Still think best to disconnect the battery and wait.

That was the advice I found when I googled the process...

I have changed / removed my steering wheel on my zeds around 10-20 times. I admit that usually I disconnect the battery and then remove the wheel, by the time I've got my screwdriver I am confident that at least 10 seconds have expired. However, on 1 steering wheel I had issues with the collar and the airbag light and I did remove the connectors multiple times without disconnecting the battery.

As mentioned, if its the odd once, disconnect, for the sake of 10 seconds but I don't think its as dangerous as the doom-mongers suggest.

I went on an airbag course with ford years ago and seen demo's of how airbag can cause life threatening damage if deployed I would always play it safe . Air bag ignitors dangerous things
