Steering Column /Ignition Lock

Does anybody have a `How to remove complete assembly procedure' please?

My ignition lock has failed in the engine `running' position and the key is rotating the barrel freely in same - had to remove plug leads to stop engine and disconnect battery to kill ignition.
I am unable to remove lock barrel due to failure mode i.e i) ident is jammed ii) key is not gripping so it looks as if the whole assembly will have to come out.

Thanks Gary - interesting. All my searches were coming up with jammed units and having to drill them out. Never realised it was such I common problem - we have had occasional problems with ours jamming on unlock but freeing easily when the wheel was rocked. Obvious now, it was only a matter of time before something broke - fortunately ours failed as we put it in the garage at home. When looking through previous owner's paperwork found an invoice that the ignition lock was replaced in 2008 - didn't last long did it.

More likely it wasn't done properly I'd guess. It certainly seems like a common issue when I had a quick look.

Agreed - the paperwork was dated ~2 years before we got the car. It was not done by a BMW dealer but a `German Car Specialist' in Hertfordshire - who I had better not name. They charged the owner £62 plus vat for new lock - cannot tell labour element because there was other un-related work listed.

Used your youtube link and it reset connection between key and switch ends of the barrel. Key now operating switch correctly, however still unable to remove barrel using the other link I was given. Suspect whatever has fallen off is fouling and it is only a matter of time before it fails again. Looks like I will have to buy a new barrel and then drill out old one.

The ignition cylinder lock barrel contact shaft inside the steering lock assembly that runs between the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch broke in my 2003 Z4. This seems to be a common problem in BMW's, and there is a replacement part available for E34, E36 (Z3?) & E39, but I can't find a replacement for E85. Most places say I have to buy the whole assembly, $150-170. The original shaft is easy to remove, so I don't understand why a replacement is so hard to find. Any suggestions?
