just been having a read through some diagnostics software, and i came across a section concerning the coding of new components, for new models of BMW you will now have to code a new battery:eek: wtf.

I think most manufacturers do this sort of thing now.

My 2014 Tiguan had to have something done to the headlights recently, apparently they needed coding as well.

Makes me wonder how expensive the modern cars are going to be to keep served/repaired in years to come.

My local VW stealer charge £90 just to plug the machine in nowadays just to give you a fault code.

Luckily we have a great independent here who is sensible, but his code reader doesn't read everything.

And whilst we're on this subject I have a rant.

Bought my Tiguan new, paid an extra £199 for three years servicing.

Good deal I thought, except I'm now told that it doesn't include all routine servicing, they want £79 for an aircon service.

The salesman said "all routine servicing included"

Think I might write them a letter.

And in future if he doesn't pay to access the VMs' portals to update the Digital Service Record, you won't be able to keep it up to date.....for new cars the book with the reassuring stamps will soon be a thing of the past.

yep letter writing is in order, just stuck £20 of fuel in my z and i had to code it before it would go through the engine
:mad:=))

I believe the same for new tyres because of the tyre pressure monitors on some cars.

I was offered the same when I bought a new Hyundai Tucson last month, £499 for the privilege, thanks but no thanks.

You must have received a written agreement at the time laying out the facts! Give it a look over, they may be screwing with you., JIM

well there would be a way around it and that is to hack the software and write out rubbish like that.

To be honest I've never placed that much store in "main dealer" history as quite often it is just over priced minimalist servicing which is fine on a young car. But they tend to show their weakness when it comes to older, higher mileage vehicles that are running at the fringes of the tolerances that need, shall we say, a bit of old fashioned skill, not just a timed oil change and codes cleared.

Totally true.

Your car goes into a main dealer for routine servicing chances are it's done by a trainee.

The "master tech" is busy doing the difficult stuff the trainees can't do.

Then, later on, the trained master techs often start up their own specialist garages.

And don't get me started on main dealer valeters, I never let them near any of my cars.

I, like many others on here, take my newer cars to the main dealer just for servicing to keep the history up, then specialist for anything else.
