Split rim re-furb

I have recently been prepping my 108 split rims ready for having them re-furbed later this year. I have managed to undo all but one of the 80 (in total) screws which hold them together. The last one, I think, will have to wait until I get the tyres off so that I can apply some gentle heat in the area of the said screw. I will be refitting these original wheels which have run flats on them albeit with good tread,

I contacted a local company this week to enquire about costs and was quoted £50 per wheel to strip, blast , and re-coat. Later, one of our guys went down there and talked to the owner who said that as they're split rims it would be £60 per wheel as the masking requires special material and is time consuming.
Does anyone have any other options, considering that it would have to be fairly local to Lincoln to make it cost effective please?

That's still a great price if they're any good Tony.
My nephew works at a refurbisher in Nottingham but at the top end of the market (Astons, Lambo's etc) told me that my 135s would be £100 each. I know I'd be getting a top job done by his own fair hands. It's probably worth it as they're original BMW wheels.
I don't think you'll beat £60 considering that all the bolt holes will probably need masking etc - all time which means labour costs.

£60 a wheel seems a good price for split rims. My Grandad recently had his 2 series ones repaired and powder coated for £60 a wheel and they are not splits. £50 - £60 a wheel seems a common price for a decent refurb on just standard wheels so what they have quoted you sounds a bargain if they are done properly.

Thanks Dave and Ian, never had any done before so really I'm on a fact finding mission to be honest. I originally bought the wheels with nearly new Goodyear F1 Eagle tyres on them for a good price and there are no chips, dings or kerb rash so they should come up good.

I don't think £60 is too bad for 108s, my absolute favourite style wheel. If they were 17s then I'd have them on my z3...still might not be able to resist though. Are you going for an original finish or a contrast?

I just paid 60 a wheel for my style 24s I'm silver

60 for splits is a great price

I'm thinking silver rims and gloss black centres or body colour centres, still undecided to be honest.

Ditto on £60 being a good price for split rims.

I had my centres done by Bournes in Birmingham for £40 each. And I'm doing the rims myself. There's only a tiny bit of the rims on display to polish up nice. The rear needs painting but it's not on display so doesn't need to be top quality.

Originally when I had the standard alloys on the zed I was thinking of having them refurbished and saw this come up one day, looked tempting but decided against it in the end!

The place had good reviews but for £20 a wheel I wouldn't expect the coat to hold up very well.

@ Faheem, I've taken hammers, nails and many other items to try to scratch or chip some powder coat and haven't been able to succeed. It's the prep work that is the important part of the job. Find a single wheel and send it in for £20 and see what they produce. I would!! JIM

Agree with the costing been good. I am always wary now the thickness of the top coat on wheels. If it is not done right they will chip quite a lot. Its a pity they dont do the same as Paint shops and bake them when they have been sprayed. Would last a lot longer

I've had quotes from 3 places for my split rims, and they have all been the same. £120 a wheel.

I can imagine it being very labour intensive to do split rims every bolt hole needs to be masked to stop the coat fouling the threads.
£60 seems a good price if their work is good

For £80 a set it's worth a punt.

It's looking like it but don't forget I'm doing half of the hard work just getting the rims in two pieces.

At least with them split you can check the finish on the mating surfaces although im not sure if these have to remain un finished to ensure a good flat mating surface?
