Hi all, I noticed a pipe that’s connected off another pipe that comes from the back of the air filter box is split, not sure what it’s called but is it possible to get a new one?
Thanks Stu

Hi Stu, a picture from a bit further away would help in identifying that. Definitely needs replacing and the dealer is best option. If you look on Real OEM you can get the part number and price.

Tony.

I can’t quite see what we’re looking at which possibly means it’s not an M54 engine which is what I’m familiar with.

But I suspect it’s an elbow on the upper or lower air box to throttle assembly. You’re looking at £30 from the dealer if so. Or £15-£20 for a copy part which may not fit as well.

This is the setup on an M54. But don’t assume these are your part numbers.

Hi Tony,
I think it might be the "intake boot kit" as shown is this picture, its the one on the right hand side.

Classic part for splitting and letting unmetered air into the system its the lower half with the offshoot hose to the idle control valve thats got the splits in your picture. Changed a couple of these on members cars, its a bit of a faff getting onto the scuring clips at the bottom and you have to get the middle plastic jointing part at the right angle to fit the top hose to the Maf.
Bottom one has a rubber flap that has to fit into an alighnment shape on the throttle body so its at the right angle.

Hi, I changed mine earlier in the summer as one had split. I would recommend that you use Bmw parts for this. They are only a few quid more, but they ‘feel’ better.

When I had a split like that on my M54 engine I got Fuel Trim errors. As others said its a bit of a fiddle but quite do-able.

Yes a split in that rubber will cause overfueling as unmetered air is being picked up in the exhaust sensors making the car think its running lean so it adds more fuel through the injectors as they operate, probably adding 20% more fuel, hence the fuel trims going high. Always a good indicator to air leaks by looking at the live data for fuel trims. If you can't find the air leaks a smoke test is more than likely to pinpoint where the leak is.
