A lot of question arise when people spot I have a Snooper sat on my dashboard. This is a device that detects laser or radar signals picked up from police speed guns and mobile units.

Some people also give me a dig about abiding to the limits all the time, which is easily done on roads you know but not so on roads you don't with modern day distractions. So with my dislike towards the "traffic police" lead me to buy a Snooper.

The next step from speed camera detectors is jammers, so something like a garage door opener can be used which displays "Error" when a policeman officer try's to register what speed your travelling at.

Now it gets a little messy because there is no law saying you cant use a jammer But......... the courts will do you for "preventing the course of justice" which carry's huge sentences like life imprisonment etc. Although an offence like this wont go that far.

I don't intend on using one but thought it would make an interesting read. This Link explains how a member of public was prosecuted for using a jammer.

I used to have a radar detector fitted to the dash back when I was a company car driver. Perfectly legal to own and use (certainly back then), but jammers were definitely a no no as far as the information was available.

Mine was a pain as it picked up all sorts of radar related chatter, such as automatic doors driving past supermarkets and so on.

Many people also don't realise that you can be prosecuted for obstructing justice by flashing other road users to ward of a speed camera too.

Tony.

Equally easily done on roads you don't know if you
1. Know the law
2. Know the road signs and markings
3. Don't get distracted!!! :p

And I speak from personal experience. I had a totally unblemished record for 25 years until one day in a strange town I managed the first two but failed to spot the 30mph signs on a dual carriage way. I won't detail why I was distracted but it was on a stretch of road close to a hospital which is notorious amongst the locals for catching unsuspecting drivers out.

One speed awareness course later I keep to the speed limit and watch very carefully for the signs! :angelic:

I'm on a speed awareness course on Monday for doing 50 in a 40 in my truck. For car users it's a national speed limit road. 3 weeks after they lifted the speed limit to 50!. I now have a sat nav that picks up static cameras and alerts me to regular spots used by the police in there little snide vans.:mad::mad:. That's a very very grumpy look!!

Yes we also have a sat nav that picks up static cameras and police etc .......... It alerts us :p
But we only use it for long distances :)
I always try and keep to the speed limits for personal reasons :)

If you venture over to France you are supposed to switch off any camera detection/ warning devices or face prosecution. TomTom appear to have tried to get around this by letting members report `danger spots' which come up as a screen warning. They don't actually tell you about this, I wonder why, and the first time this happened to me on an open road, and under the limit, the first reaction was WTF Danger there's only a speed camera there .........

Not if you do it with your lights @t-tony........;)
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to answer that in the time honoured tradition Mike, so I'll just say, " T.....you know what!"

BBC Radio Leicester used to give out the locations of the mobile camera vans for the day every morning.
Gave all the street/road names that would be inforced during the day.
Thought it odd but hey wasn't complaining and it was accurate.
Id just avoid the roads being a white van man
