Guys, I am now moving my attention to the interior and have a Sony MEX stereo with lots of power, I want to upgrade the speakers but not sure what to use, the car doesn't have an amp, (I think) I believe 5.25cm speakers for the front are correct but what can I get away with in the rear, I am quite happy to enlarge the holes to take bigger speakers, also not sure wether to use coax speakers or tweeters, I just need quite loud and clear not ear splitting with boom boom bass

no need for coax in the back just need some larger drivers.

you have tweeters in the doors

upgrade the front speaker and tweeters with a crossover
larger rear speakers

I can blag my way around an engine bay but start saying s*** like, coax with large drivers and components with a rockford fosgate flat sub with 4 channel and 2 channel, and I look at my phone with the same confusion as I get when I tried explaining a limited slip diff to my lass!

Hi Sean d, have a look at Hertz component kit for your Z on the net. I changed all my speakers for Hertz kit plus a Alpine HU and transformed the sound, the speakers are a straight swap and I connected to OEM wiring, the hardest part was the tweeters in the door cards. It honestly is amazing what a differance it made.
Rha, Roy.

5.25inch front speakers. I like infinity speakers. Will be direct fit but need to be terminated

Rears depend on whether you have pre or post facelift. But of you are happy cutting plastic anything will fit

The speakers will need connectors fitting as the aftermarket ones won't be the same as bmw connectors.

I have no idea on the rears

The rear speakers are only hindered normally by mounting depth so you need to make sure they are relatively shallow mount to flush fit them to the panel even if you add additional grills, or spacer rings are needed .

Yeah in my original build i did you could still use componants in the front and add tweeters there too the position of them in the Z3 is not ideal really but they work ok.

really no point having tweeters in the rear as they are for high frequencies.

you can buy coaxial that have both the woofer and tweeter in them combined if you really want.

I have vibe 5.25" crossovers with tweeters in the front and 4" vibe speakers behind the seats. Alongside the normal tweeters plus harmon kardon ones in the door and a blaukpunt slim sub behind the seat. It's a great set up and sounds good enough even with the roof down.
