I've done a bit of looking into this on Ngk website it lists the Bkr6ek as standard plug and concurs with Bentley manual by saying the gap is preset the champion plug listed in the Haynes manual for the z3 does have a gap listed for it

On one of my minis I had to replace the spark plugs every 3 months, or about 500 miles. This was due to an over timing. I've now moved to blowtorching the plugs to get them clean and they run like new every time!

When I replaced my ngk with the new iridium version, I felt a more responsive engine. And it will last more. Very satisfied with the choice!

It may be a placebo effect Dan. Just by replacing the plugs would improve the response, depending how bad the old ones were.;)

To conclude, replaced plugs this morning with NGK BKR6EK which are recommended standard plugs for the engine. As it happens, the old ones were the same make and code and appeared in reasonable condition (some light brown colouring which is OK). The gaps (two on each plug) on the new plugs were (just) noticeably smaller than on the old ones. Plugs last changed in June 2016. According to the service manual, plugs should be changed at Inspection One. Inspection One seems to come around (for me) every 3/4 years, so all seems to fit well.:)
