I didn't have the option with the Z4 so carried the rat tail repair kit along with the slime - never used the slime but did use the rat tails when a screw went through the tyre and it worked fine.
However, I also have a space saver in the garage and fancied installing that in the cage under the Z3 boot - had a go yesterday but it looks like I'm missing a few parts.
I don't have a plastic tray to put the wheel in and I think there is a disc (similar to the one in the tool tray) and bolt missing from being the drivers brake light.
Can anyone confirm and I'd be keen to learn if carrying a space saver is the norm? Cheers.

Waste of time as the wheel you take off won't fit in the boot. I took the spare wheel and carrier off my Z3 s. I tried to sell them , but couldn't give them away!

I have actually used my space saver when a broken spring went through the front tyre wall. As I was only a mile from home my good lady came out and we put the burst wheel in her car. Otherwise you are stuffed unless you want to put it on the passenger seat, or on the passenger's lap! The driver's handbook tells you in detail how to operate the spare wheel carrier, and how to jack up and change the wheel, but oddly makes no mention of what to do with the flat tyred wheel.

To answer RickyBobby, yes there is a bolt below the tray behind the light unit which the long plug spanner in the tool kit fits.

Tha ks - looks like I'm also missing the long plug spanner from the toolkit as well but based on what you've said it sounds like a pointless exercise - I wouldn't want to be leaving the punctured wheel behind so would still need someone to come out. :(
Mine is on the original style 18's and I had just assumed I could chuck the punctured wheel in the boot.

18 inch wheel !!! Mine is on 17 inch, with rears wider than the fronts, and both of those are far too big for the boot. What gets me about modern car wheels is that they are so heavy. I'm in my seventies and I find lifting the rear wheel on to its hub is almost more than I can manage. I thank BMW for the supplied tool to assist in locating the wheel - its invaluable to me.

Way back when, the mantra for good handling was to reduce the unsprung weight. What ever happened to that idea?

Sorry I meant style 18's not 18 inch - I think they are 17 inch and aren't staggered so tyre size all round is 225 / 45.

Out of interest what does the supplied fitting too look like - fear I may be missing one of those as well?

A steel bar (Plastic coated one end) that screws into the bolt holes ---normally use 2 then its easy to slide the wheel over them, it holds the wheel in place while other bolts are fitted. Then removed and final bolts fitted. At one time they were standard in BMW kits days of e39 etc. I think the Z3 only has one in tool tray , I keep another one as well, must check they are still there.

While I've mentioned what I don't seem to have in the tool kit here's something I do have - only problem is I've no idea what to do with it.

Can someone enlighten me? Thanks

That is a wheel chock for when you have to lift it using the car's own jack. My car came to me three years ago with the tool kit complete, and I only have one wheel locating pin. I would love to have two.

I am sure one of the dismantlers will help you out with another one, i do find two useful
Also into the over 70 section so very handy
I have an idea that it can also be used with the long plug spanner —- never actually used that

Depends what you do with your zed as stated the wheels don't fit in boot really but ask @Sean d what he would have done on last years Scottish run without @Mint spare wheel and @mwpe carrying Sean's rear wheel ( in a wheel bag) for the rest of the day after he wrecked the tyre and put a foot long crack in the alloy after going over what could only be described as a crater and nothing less when we were here

Half way through the first day and in the middle of nowhere at the top of the Isle of Skye 80 miles from the hotel.

Following day @Jjim had a flat on a rear and also had to use a spare saver to get him back to the hotel once again Mike stepped in to take the wheel so the space saver can definitely have its place depending on what you do with your zed.

I'm in my seventies too and well knackered ! If anybody has any of the wheel locator tools I'd love a couple. I certainly struggle with the wheels on my Z4.

Yes @Stevo7682, but that depends on having mates driving around with you! The answer is to have breakdown cover for such emergencies as we don't drive about on zroadster trips all the time.

That's why I said depends on what you do with your zed personally I have the spare in both our zeds as I go places for example when doing a recce for things like the Scottish run if that had happened to me when I doing the dummy run in the same place as Sean quiet single track road middle of nowhere no phone signal no house for miles Lynne would have had a wheel in its bag on her lap or i would put a towel down and strapped it to the bootlid.
