My spare wheel tyre is shot and getting a replacement is proving nigh on impossible.
So do I just bin the whole thing?
If so, what do you suggest I carry in case of a puncture?

Try looking around breakers for other vehicles which ran the same sized space saver which lived in the boot instead of out in the open Paul.

Tony.

With my experience of punctures I will never get rid of the spare. That said trying to accommodate the punctured wheel is a bit of a pain.

Thanks Alan. I agree with that, not sure Ann Marie would like getting the bus home as the punctured wheel sits in the passenger seat!

Just for info… I have managed to find an actual replacement wheel which is rust free. It is the 20 year old tyre which I would not risk on the road which everyone tells me is now unobtainable.
Maybe a slightly different tyre size would work?

Wife and punctured wheel on bus is best solution; keeps the leather clean!
Might be some unintended consequences though, but nothing chocolate and flowers can't fix!!

The best solution is she takes the wheel on the bus to the nearest tyre dealer, but that might be pushing my luck a little.

My 21 year old spare quite happily made the 300 mile trip from the lakes back home to Surrey last year. At 50 MPH limit there is not much to worry about. My spare wheel and tyre are regularly checked.

You (obviously) check how old the tyre is?

Umm, obviously not! If the tyre had blown out (it's very old and will be perished), what would your insurance company have to say?

You're right on the money there.

You could put a 175 /65 on the rim, and chuck it in the boot, or lengthen the droppers on the basket by 10mm to accomodate it. You have a hiway speed spare then.

In the uk that would still be classed as a space saver ( due to different size across axle) and subject to a 50 mph speed limit.

But obviously a better type of tyre than the space saver tyre

My last skoda had alloys with 225/45/17 and a steel spare with a 205/55/16 with the big yellow stickers on the wheel with 50 mph stamped on
