Booked in a for a new roof in Swansea on Wednesday, so decided to travel up the night before. With the weather looking good I took the afternoon off and tried to see how many of my favourite roads I could fit in before sunset.
Leaving at 12:30 from the outskirts of London, I encountered quite heavy traffic all the way into the Cotswolds and lots of slow moving trucks on my B road route through Ross-on-Wye. Then I took the B4560 north from Ebbw Vale: spectacular scenery complete with sheep and wild horses. After that, the plan was to press on to Brecon and Llandovery, but I changed my mind and instead headed north on the B4520 to Builth Wells and then down the A483. These two stretches of road are absolutely epic and were almost completely free of traffic. From Llandovery it was on to Llangadog and the Black Mountain pass. Another fantastic road leading up to the pass and fortunately the average speed cameras on the pass are still chopped down, so no need to stick to the 40 all the way along. Leaving the Black mountains just after 8pm, I spot a Z4 parked up and take a quick photo and head towards Swansea. With just about enough time to get there before dark, I decided to tick another box and try to get papped outside the house in Porthcawl. Arriving just after sunset, I park up and grab the last coffee of the day at Mama Fran’s airstream. Sure enough, @bombur gets the shot. The on to the hotel and a fill up before bed. 310 miles of roof down pleasure.

What a great trip, superb photos. Enjoy Swansea while your new roof is fitted. Unless you hang around at Jack Smiths, he does like to chat;)

Sounds like a great trip once you were well away from London and what a bonus adding that fine insect collection!:)

Mine is booked in with him in June - what was the outcome with yours in terms of fit and satisfaction?

Guess we will get that answer later as it is only getting fitted today.
What i would say is seen 2 or 3 of jacks roofs and they have all looked good
Stephen.

Finally back home with my new hood. I say hood, not roof in case there’s any confusion about what you get. It’s only the fabric and the window, everything else stays the same. Raymond warned me that people complain about two things: new leaks after the hood is replaced and not being able to close the roof after the hood is replaced. I can confirm that I have the same complaints. I left today with the roof down and about 15 minutes later I decided to put it up and it was so tight I thought I was going to bend the frame to close it. I definitely couldn’t latch it from the inside. Eventually I managed to get it on, but it felt like I was going to break the latches. Then, later there was a very big storm and I discovered my side windows leak in a new place above my shoulder. I suspected this might happen and hopefully this can be cured by adjusting the rubber seals. Otherwise it looks good, but the rubber trim around the bottom suffered some damage in a few places. I think this is just cosmetic, but annoying.

I was alway lead to believe that the new roof should remain closed for a few weeks so that it stretches and settles into its new position. Didn't the fitter close it before handing the car back to you with roof closed?

I fitted my own roof last summer and pulled it over but not closed and left it baking in the sun all day and closed it fully once it was nice, hot and soft. Then left it baking some more. Left it closed for a couple of weeks before opening.

The trip home was much less exciting, but the highlight was popping round to see @bombur and his collection of Zeds. Then I had a vey nice lunch at Baffle Haus Old Post

He didn’t recommended anything like that but I’m not going to open it now for a while. I wonder what they were like new from the factory.

A few more photos from the return journey. I went back via Cheddar Gorge. For some reason I had not been there before. I wasn’t impressed with Cheddar. The road surface quality is terrible and there are a lot of small rocks spilled onto the road. Also lots of evidence of people drifting and doing burnouts there.

That trim damage is annoying and looks like it's been done with a blade - he should at least have pointed that out.

Nice to see an honest review of his work and I hope you manage to make the necessary adjustments to resolve the leak and fitment issues

I’ve had a couple of roofs done there & he did tell me not to open the roof for a few days to give the material time to stretch & the sealant time to dry

That rubber trim around the rear just slots out and back in easily. I'd expect fitter to remove that first before doing anything else so it shouldn't get damaged.

That side rubber above the side window. They just clip in and when clipping them in there's a little room to move fore and aft. If there isn't enough movement then, while the rubber is out, you can see that the bracket that the rubber clips into is screwed to the frame. You can loosen the screws and move the bracket fore/aft/up/down so you can adjust it quite a lot.

But I wouldn't fiddle with the brackets yet. (We're talking about that gap between the rubbers above the side window) Maybe rub along that rubber to see if you can scoot it along justna bit to close that gap.

Let the roof bake in the sun and settle down for a week or more before adjusting brackets etc.

Yes, I might try get a replacement rubber trim piece, but for now it’s only cosmetic and minor at that. For the side window rubbers, I intended to do just as you say. Interestingly, the leak I previously had at the top of the quarter light seems to be cured, so I will try to leave the front rubbers as they are and nudge the middle and back up a bit. Thanks for the advice👍

I should have hung around and “helped”. I might have learned something and got some good photos. Sadly, I was down the road in a very nice coffee shop working. Raymond does like a chat!

I probably used the same lovely cafe to work from whilst mine was being done
