And to think we were given the option to take the VW factory as 'reparations' in 1945 and turned it down! Mind you, it would have probably gone the way of BL in the UK's hands. :whistle:
IIRC it was a British Army Major that was tasked with getting VW back on its feet post WW2 to get some energy back into the economy.

Assume you mean the red cross beetle. The thing on the wing. Some kind of downward shining side light?
My guess is a ducted 'snorkel' air intake, as it was designed to be an 'all road' type thing.

My son has a 1960 light blue one of which he is the second owner, with 2.2ltr engine Porch wheels, had a back to metal respray new running boards recently had a new head lining and the original seats restitched, it looks more or less standard but at Santa Pod did naught to 60 under 6 seconds
