Clearly not satisfied with just one Z3 requiring lots of work (progress thread), I have embarked on a second, albeit requiring considerably less effort and budget, one that I can do in the living room when I can't face being outside, and perhaps most importantly, one that will not lead to divorce! What's more, this one is NEW, with zero miles on the clock and I am the first owner! Hopefully less leakage too...
The plan will be to recreate Tandy (actually Tandy's LHD cousin) as closely as is possible at this scale and with my questionable modelling skills. To do so, I'll need to create my own wheels, roll hoops and although pictured on the box art, there aren't any seat belts - which is quite a noticeable feature of Tandy. Apart from those, the rest will just be paint, and perhaps some custom number plate decals if I can find out how.
I have started with the wheels, which at 1/24 scale makes them a tiny 17mm diameter - not ideal for 3D printing with any sense of detail, but once I have a design that prints well and looks reasonable, I'll spray them with a high build primer and then sand them into a passable shape. This is my attempt at modelling the Style 18 alloys (doing it from eye. I'll go and take some measurements at some point and see whether I need to make any alterations, although at this scale once 3D printed I'm not sure how much difference a tenth of a millimetre here or there will make!).
I did print one off to see how well something like this will come out at this scale, and the barrel and spokes aren't actually too bad, good enough as a starting point for the primer and some sanding. However the spindle in the middle failed, that is just way too narrow for my printer. For the mk2 is going to be made of two halves, and using a short stub of unprinted filament as the axle - which happens to be damn near the perfect diameter.
(Shiny black filament doesn't photograph very well, but it's the filament I had loaded and I couldn't be arsed to swap to another colour for a quick test)
