My Z has not been running right for a while now, far too rich so had the stat changed a an improvement but still a bit farty at times. So got a Simota to fit but still waiting on a part, also in the middle of a dissertation so fairly head wrecked at times.

Drove back from Norwich with the petrol gauge going down faster than a would be WAG. Had a look this morning and the mechanic had not done up the jubilee clip on the engine side of the MAF. It was only just hanging on so tightened it up, actually had to move it from the centre of the pipe to the end. Instant difference to the intake too early to tell about petrol consumption.

So having a conversation with my wife about a Z4 coupe, there was on parked outside our house. Would I want one, yes and no I love the Z3 but the power on the 1.9 is pants so we came to the conclusion that a more powerful Z3 is what I want.

So here it is guys came with the wife blessing to keep my Z, but change the engine I know this is a fairly expensive way of doing things. My thought are to go V8/10 turbo and keep the car. Any advice would be good I am at the moment looking out for a suitable donor engine. Will be asking Gaz and Lee at the Shed tm for advice on suspension and mods.

There is a guy that has a Chevvy V8 in his, not sure I'd he's on here or not. It's a monster. Saw it at last year's Zed Fest.

Stick a 2.8 in it and tune up to what you can afford.

Nice and driveable too

Turbo V8/V10 would be too much for that little chassis I reckon..My opinion anyway.

Lovely torque in the 2.8 as well..

Hi guys just got back from a drive, huge difference in tick over and smooth running
. Just having the front wheels balanced and tracking done. It just lacks power so yup 2.8 or 3.0l I think is the way forward.

If you have 10k to spend put a v8 in

If you don't, sell up and buy a 2.8 or 3.0

But if the car is good and you know it well think I would rather put a 2.8 in,
Buy one strip it down replace some nice bits and put her in then spend the rest of the money on chassis upgrades and big big brakes,,

@deano1712 is a member here but doesn't come on very often. He is out giving his zed a shakedown around North Yorkshire today so may reply back later this weekend. However be prepared to sink far more than £10k into the project if you want to go down a similar route.

If you have the time, ability and money I can't think of a better marriage than an LS motor in a Z3.
A BMW V8 is nice but just to doesn't offer the rawness that an LS unit does. A useable cobra.

Just looked at the Welsh Cruise he had his V8 on, thats a brutal engine and I think would be the polar opposite of mine.

I can agree was on that run and he just has to touch the throttle and he is a mile further down the road than most folk were in the 3.0s

I'm sure I'll get chance to discuss this further with you at some stage. My opinion on this is to just buy a zed with a bigger engine unless you have a LOT of money to throw around. The biggest issue will be finding somewhere that is prepared to carry out the work. It's a relatively straight forward swap 6 pot for 6 pot, but going from a 4 pot to a 6 pot will involve much more effort. Not just in engine/gearbox/drive train but also in upgrading the suspension and braking system to match.

Moving up to a V8/V10 is going to involve a huge amount of work including custom fabrication of certain parts, and strengthening of others. Basically money pit.

I don't want to sound negative about the idea, but buying a bigger engined Zed is just cheaper and easier long term!

Hey you're talking about me :shy:

If you want more power the advice on buying a faster car is a good one. I went the V8 route and it was a far bigger job than I expected. £12k for the engine installed and then you have to think about upgrading other stuff on the car. Its taken me 5-years to get it running trouble free, confirmed just today with a good trouble free run out. The reward is ace though if you were daft enough to do it lol. I have been considering adding forced induction but that's a thought for the winter months when I have forgotten how quick it is. I think ~550 hp is enough for a zed. There is a guy in aus building a Z3/ LS3 with a charger aiming for 800hp.

If you want tempting the sound during the first few seconds of this video is what its like.
