You probably have seen my latest new car post but the saying "there's nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW" comes to mind! It went to the mechanic this week to fix a couple of things and the diagnosis is not to spend any money on it as it has been bodged to mask an overheating problem, pointing toward needing major work. This is not something I have the skills, time or money for as the car was supposed to be a bit of cheap fun and an engine rebuild doesn't deliver that.

So it's now up here for a week before it goes on eBay as a project. I'm happy to do a deal with a forum user before it goes for public sale. I'm waiting on the V5 to come back but I'm happy to post that on if it is sold quickly.
  • 1998 1.9i M44 16V engne
  • 5-speed manual
  • 113000 miles
  • Nearly complete stamped service history
  • MOT til November 2023
  • Electric working roof
  • Black leather interior in good condition apart from broken seat belt loops - nice condition interior all round
  • Heated seats
  • Aircon - unknown status as belt disconnected
  • Factory roll hoops
  • Speaker between the rear seats
  • Staggered style 18 alloy wheels with OK tyres

It's apparently had a respray in its history but looks alright and as you can see by the pictures there is very little rust and all jacking points are still there and in good nick. The roof has a bit of sealant around the rear screen drivers side but is not ragged at all, it looks good hasn't leaked with all the rain in the last week so is pretty watertight. This is not a rot box and is definitely worth someone with some skills just putting a new engine in and using for years to come. I'm sure it would part out for close to if not more than the asking price but it would be a shame to do that.

It needs an engine or better diagnosis so come and take it away. It starts, drives and stops but I'd trailer it away if i were you. If you have a great engined rusty old cobbler then buy this one and combine the too - job done!! For the 50 mile thrash on my way home from buying it the car it did not miss a beat..... and I'm now very glad it didn't!!

    £1350.

I'm near the M4/M5 junction in north Bristol. Any good to anyone?

    Thanks, Rich.

That’s a shame as it looks tidy enough. Engine swap probably be the cheapest option. What was the ‘bodge’ in question?

They've tried to mask the overheating with a new radiator filled with stop leak. It's over-pressurising and causing the new rad to bulge after only 10 minutes of running.

That is a real shame, sorry to hear but hopefully you will get your money back by selling on or breaking. Moral of the story...never buy from a Welsh Crook

They aren't tragic to repair. The head will need skimming but M44's come apart easily enough.

Agreed, and I don't have the time or space to break it so there's money on the table for the person who does.

Yep - can't find the shady little man either.... he's disappeared!!

Yeah I've heard. Will be a great car if the next owner puts it right.

Had my fair share of eBay messers and had four firm offers of £1200 that then disappear.

SO Before i tell the world it is for sale again there must be someone here who this is worth £1000 to? This is less than I paid for it but I need it gone.

The DVLA have been difficult about getting the V5 into my name but I think we've finally shaken hands on it so I should be getting it back this/next week.

So come and get it, this is a great deal.

Thanks,
Rich
