Hi peeps,
Got a small problem no engine light and everything works and sounds ok but...... sometimes when you turn the steering the revs rise for a second and when you pull away there is a flat spot just as you pull away and a couple of times today the engine revs dropped so low when I stopped at a junction the engine died but like I said its not all the time and when you are on your way its perfect, I have a feeling it maybe a air leek somewhere, I have had a quick look but all seems nice and clean and quite new looking on a lot of the pipes so not sure if the last owner tried to cure the problem, I have a receipt for a new inlet pipe but any help would be great :)
cheers :)

Hi @Dickymint

I was going to suggest the throttle body boot, check for cracks and that the idle control valve hose is secure underneath. Hopefully someone else will be along soon if it isn't either of those

Cheers

An easy way to locate induction leaks is to get an aerosol can of carb cleaner or even brake cleaner will do. With the engine idling spray the carb cleaner around the hoses etc and listen for a rise in engine revs as the induction draws the fluid in and burns it.

Sounds like an air leak, but could be a cam sensor, I would also try and read the codes, if here are none present, then I would lean to an induction leak, what version z3 do you have btw?

Agree with Zedonist re cam sensor, my 2.0 did exactly the same re cutting out at junctions and down on power but it always put the light on, as he said best to get codes read. Mine was I let cam sensor btw.

Its the 2.2 and yea no engine light, I have the lead and a laptop but cant find the software  all the links are out of date though I may get a Bluetooth thingy and use the Torque app I have on my phone, I have done some research on the old interwebby and someone on another site described the symptom's better than me and pointed out the revs were about 600rpm something I noticed but thought nothing more at the time about it, he found cleaning the idle control valve cured it so that's another area to look at and taking all that to bits will give me a chance to check the vacuum pipes so its kinda a 2 for one job, It may take a while as I have osteoarthritis of the spine and leaning over a car bonnet is not the easiest position to be in :p
Anyway cheers peeps I'll take a look at the codes soon as I can, by the way anyone recommend a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter or are they all the same?

As its a 2.2, then other areas are the vacuum system and the PCV, I would check all the simple easy to reach things first, btw have you ruled out sticking throttle body? This is easy to remove and clean, some times gets gummed up by the oil fed back into the system, more do on a 2.2.

A dirty/faulty maf can also give the impression of an air leak/weak running without always putting on a warning light, disconnect & run without for a while to see if it improves.
