Hi,
Z3 1.9L 1999 Roadster M43 engine
Just replaced my radiator for a Nissen type and filled the system with new antifreeze / DI water @ 50%.
Bled the system as per my previous thread "Expansion tank leak".

Everything seems OK e.g. heater works when hot selected, no leaks, and level in the expansion tank returns to KALT when cold (i.e. after being left o/night). Filled the system with 6.4 lts and the difference from spec of 6.5 lts being explained by "hold up in the system".

Upon driving, the gauge needle increases ( as one expects) and seems to settle at an area about 1/2 way between the 2nd white mark on the gauge and the thermometer icon on the gauge.

However, I did notice that the needle does move, not eratically but smoothly, dependent on driving style e.g. @70 on a dual carriageway and say 50 on a A road betwen the two aforementioned marks i.e. the white 2nd mark and the thermometer icon. 10miles @70 the needle was rock solid on the 2nd white mark.

If I park up and let the hot engine run (e.g. in a traffic queue) , the needle moves slightly beyond the thermometer and the fan kicks in. When I drive off, the needle slowly drops to between the 2nd white mark and the thermometer icon after ca 3 miles.

As I am new to BMW and Z3 in particular, I am querying whether this is normal - I suspect it isn't but it could just be a more sensitive temp gauge/sender than I am used to.
Should I try another bleed by raising the front of the car, turning the engine on and opening the bleed screw?
As I have put my expansion cap from my previous radiator on the new Nissen one could this be an issue?
Is there a simple check to see if the system is pressurising without buying any tools?
There are no leaks of coolant that I can see. No coolant is seen to be escaping from the expansion tank cap.

As always any advise will be much appreciated.

Kind REgards
Brian

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck in the open position, which will stop the engine getting upto normal temp.

Hi Mark,
Sounds possible but I am a bit concerned if the pressure in the system is low as this is directly proportional to temperature. My concern is also based on the fact I changed the radiator but used the original BMW cap. Not sure if this is an issue or not.
When at normal engine temp can you easily squeeze the coolant hoses e.g. the top left hand side one ?
Kind Regards
Brian

I had a VW a few years ago with the same symptoms. If the thermostat is letting coolant through when cold you’re constantly pumping coolant through the rad, and at this time of year it won’t get up to full temp unless stationary or under full load at slow speed (eg a long steep hill).
Temp gauge should hold steady at the centre of the gauge in normal use.

Thanks Mark ...I guess I am trying to not avoid the issue but dealing with my disappointment of having done all the work replacing the radiator to find that the thermostat is playing up....
I think I might replace the coolant pipes as well ...know anybody who does good ones?
Kind Regards
Brian

I have a 1999 1.9 like you, very low mileage 43k on her and rad is still ok and temp guage acts as it should so thermostat likely to be still working ok. If the rad needed changing then I would automatically put a new thermostat in, it makes sense to do it for what it costs and avoid any future problem arising. Would consider replacing the coolant hoses if they were looking perished or thin. I would source parts from the usual online parts sites, firstly Carparts4less the web only site of Europarts who are usually cheaper than Euro for the same parts.

Thanks Colb - I think its a new thermostat job. Would like to replace the hoses as well but having difficulty sourcing them as Euro parts and Cparts4less don't do them.
Any ideas?
Kind Regards
Brian

There seems to be different brands of thermostats - Mahle being the most expensive which after discount is ca £65. Anyone any experience of fitting a particular brand?
Also does anyone know the specified opening temperature?
Again, many thanks in advance
Kind Regards
Brian

Get the part numbers off realOEM for your model and do a search on AutoDoc. Good range of OE brands.
ship from europe somewhere, so take a bit longer to arrive, but good prices.

Thanks guys - will do.
Odd though 2 different temp ranges - do you happen to know what the spec is for this engine?
Kind Regards
Brian

I ordered some bits from AutoDoc to UK last Tuesday- they arrived on Friday- from Berlin.
