Hey everyone. So I bought a project Z3 (2001, wide body, 2.2l, 6 cyl, UK Model) about 4 years ago. It was running and road worthy. Long story short but it then spent 3 years in an aircraft hanger about 3500 miles from the UK then 12 months sat outside in a Mediterranean country... quite hot in the summer). I am trying to get it roadworthy again but have run into some difficulties.

Essentially, it won't start. It turns over fine but there is a whoop whoop noise coming from seemingly in front of the drivers area of the engine. I replaced the MAF sensor before it went into storage. I fitted a new battery today, the old one held volts, but wasn't sure on amps.

I have googled to try to find which relays kick in on start up in case it is the immobiliser.. it does however start with a push jump start (not ideal, I know) but the starter motor is turning on a static start.

Several relays to the right of the engine kick in as you go through the key positions as you are at the front of the car looking toward the engine (DMS?) but I don't know if that's good or bad.

I'm wondering if it's maybe a cam or crank sensor that's disabling start, but I need to dig deeper on google for that.

Anyway, just thought I would say hi. I'm an engineer by profession and did motor mechanics GCSE in 1988... which is of no use at all even with a 2001 engine 🤣🤣

Best regards

Steve

Hey Tony.. Oddly enough we just moved back to Cyprus from Waddington which is where the Z3 is. It's a lifetime project so I'm not in a rush, but have slowly been cosmetically renovating it.

Thanks for the reply Steve, you could start a progress thread if you would like to, to keep us all up to date. Do you have a code reader yet? A “must have” for these old cars. Mine is a Foxwell but there are many other good brands out there.

Tony.

ps. Did you replace the MAF with a genuine one or cheap aftermarket one? A small spray of carb cleaner of brake cleaner into the inlet will tell if you have a spark when cranking. Inlet manifold rubber boots are very common issues on these cars.

:welcome: to the Forum from West Cumbria. As Tony said mate, a code reader should reveal the fault and save you time and ££s chasing it down.

Hey Tony, more than happy to start a progress thread. I have a lot of work to do, and I may upset the purists... this will be a keeper so I want it to be for me, not to the original spec. I've had several BMWs over the years, still use a 1 series as a daily runner but to give you an example.. I'm not a fan of the BMW orange buttons/dials/clocks etc so was slowly replacing with ice blue (which looks pretty cool.... I know, kick me out of the group already 🤣🤣).

Many many years ago, I was a saddle maker, so used to stitching leather. The leather seats were worn through on the arm part, so I'm slowly stitching new seat covers, I also need to re-fashion the foam seats under the covers as they have worn away in parts.

The wheels need a re-coat/re-paint, as do parts of the car. The sill covers need reforming due to rust, again, on the to do list.

Like I said, lots to do and a labour of love (and currently frustration 🤣🤣) but we'll get there.

Best regards,

Steve

Andy, Hi,

So I have a bluetooth OBD II reader, it recognises that the car is a BMW. It's car agnostic and works great on my 1 series and my Freelander 2... unfortunately it isn't showing any faults for this issue.

I have a few other faults at the mo, in that it won't go into gear / change gear when the engine is running, I'm suspecting a master / slave cylinder issue as the brakes are pretty sloppy too.

Since my return, the car has made one journey, from my friends house who watched it for 3.5 years, and that only made it after a crew of burly guys all pushed me down the road. Gear change was difficult to say the least.

It's quite depressing as it was fully running when I left the island in 2019...

Guessing you are ex RAF or still serving.. Per Ardua back atcha friend 👍

Are you plugging in under the bonnet connection? The under dash only picks up certain aspects I believe whereas the under bonnet picks up the lot. @Stevo7682 what is your scanner mate, C310? If it's the slave then it's relatively easy as it's external to the box. A full fluid change will be the order of the day after 3.5 years and if it is the Slave an Italian Tune once warmed up.

Yup, Fire for 23 years, ejected in 2007.

You need a 21 pin connector (I think that's the right amount.

The small round connector cap ringed.

Edit. Yours is a 2.2 and newer so location may differ.

Hey Andy, thanks for the tip. Found it today so just need to get a 20 pin to 16 pin adapter at the weekend. Hopefully it'll reveal a bit more of why she won't start. If not, I think I'll start at the cam inlet sensor and work my way round. Maybe even give it a shine on my way through.

👍👍

Try a quick spray of carb. cleaner into the inlet as someone cranks it.

Tony.
