Considering biting the bullet and buying a Simota for my 2.8 - currently have a fogged airbox w/ K&N panel filter, is it worth the cost?

I voted yes! I'm not sure what price they are these days, but I paid £250 delivered for mine some years back.

Went from the stock air box to the Simota and I definitely think it made a difference to the smoothness through the rev range. That coupled with a decent exhaust on a cold winters morning was glorious...

I've had both, a genuine simota and a reproduction one. In all honesty I would say there is little difference between the two. They do sound good :) But realistically with the effort that goes into the design of these cars do we really believe that BMW's efforts can be improved upon. I don't honestly think they give the reported bhp gain but they certainly look and sound nice. If I had £250 in my pocket to buy something for Zeddy I'd probably buy something else before the simota as the repo is an adequate alternative IMHO.

I didn't have anything to compare mine to at the time. I have just remembered though that I did fit a basic cone filter, which seemed to provide a similar experience (I'll blame old age).

As Gaz has said the exhaust will give you the best noise, the eisenmann exhaust on mine (that used to be gaz's) is amazing and well worth the money.
I'd look out for a repo to keep the costs down.

I have a cheap cone filter, which is the same as the one Gaz got after I fitted mine. I didn't want it for performance purposes, purely just for the sound and when you hit the accelerator it certainly does roar. Cost about 30 quid and comes with a nice big metal tube to fit between the filter and air intake and a couple of brackets. Ideally it needs a heat shield round it, which I planned on making but haven't got round to it yet.

@john1534 Can't remember the name of the unit, it was just a universal one for an E46 which I got from eBay. I think it was this one which comes with the filter, pipe and clamps etc but I am not 100% sure. Maybe @GazHyde can remember?

Couple of pics anyway

As I couldn't remember I'd even fitted this one, perhaps not. I do remember you posted an eBay link to it at the time, and the one just you posted sure looks similar.

Description is a bit intriguing though =))
