Is my car the only one that likes to whine at 80?
Nothing at 75 or 85, just 80.
Not that I hear it much, because as you know, the speed limit is 70!

Sorry @Dalek :offtopic: posts. Mine runs sweet as at all speeds, suspects an issue of some kind?

@Dalek is the whine continuous or is it on acceleration or over run and where does it sound like it comes from

The sound just appears as you approach 80 in a gentle acceleration as on a motorway. It is a continuous sound and then fades away as you get faster. Sounds as if it is coming from the rear but can’t be sure with my hearing!! If you stay at 80 the sound is there all the time.
I use it as an audio cruise control!

Possible diff whine maybe. Done any fluid changes on the diff or gearbox recently?

Does it change if you dip the clutch and take the load off the transmission ?

Was heading same direction as @Lee how new is the diff oil / when was the oil level last checked.
Wouldn't immediately suspect anything like a wheel bearing as generally you would pick up on that at much lower speeds .

Can’t dip the clutch as I don’t have one! (Auto). She is in for a full service in the next few days so will get them to check the diff oil at the same time.

I'm no mechanic but i thought diff whine straight away. Tis fairly common and if it is i wouldn't worry about it to much

I remember this thread, I have an update for it.

One of my Z's had what sounds like the same as yours, you could change the noise by going on, and off, the throttle.

Me being the perfectionist I am took the car into my local specialist to do the diff, new bearings etc..

Saw him today and he showed me the offending bearings.

Should have the car back soon after Xmas so I'll report back then.

But I have heard since that's it's common for them to have a slight whine at 70mph or so.

The car has only done 46,000 miles but the diff had a slight oil weep that the previous owner had ignored.

Thanks for the update. I aim to get the diff overhauled early in the new year so will be really interested in your feedback.

It's a common problem,on off throttle at speed , it's nothing to worry about at all , people have fitted sound deading pads in the boot and inside the gearbox tunnel,to make the diff sound a bit quieter , but there's a cheaper option, turn the stereo up.
Jimmy.
